A man has died after being pulled unresponsive from the water off Hallandale Beach on Friday morning, according to local police.
Hallandale Beach police told CBS News Miami that officers responded to the 1800 block of South Ocean Drive just after 9:30 a.m. following reports of an unresponsive person in the water who appeared to have been diving.
Hallandale Beach Ocean Rescue crews pulled the man from the water and immediately began lifesaving measures. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue then rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Witness Tim Harbacheuski was heading to a reef about 500 feet offshore with friends that morning when they spotted a diver in distress. He described the conditions as ideal for diving — calm water, clear skies, and no wind.
By the time Harbacheuski and his friends reached the shore, the man was already lying motionless on the beach, showing no signs of life. He said he and other witnesses watched as rescue crews worked to resuscitate the man for several minutes before he was placed in an ambulance.
Another swimmer at the scene said a snorkeler noticed the diver struggling and quickly jumped onto a nearby jet ski to help bring him to shore.
Investigators say there is currently no indication of foul play, though the exact circumstances that led to the man’s death are still being examined. Police have not released the victim’s identity, and no further details have been made public at this time.
