A 40-year-old man has been arrested after police said surveillance footage showed him killing a mother duck and several ducklings in Pembroke Pines.
Christopher Antoine was taken into custody Monday after a Good Samaritan recognized him from a flyer released by the Pembroke Pines Police Department and contacted authorities, police said. He is facing charges of aggravated animal abuse and violation of probation.
The incident happened Aug. 30 in the area of University Drive and Northwest 13th Street. Police said investigators began looking for the man after video of the incident surfaced and showed what appeared to be the deliberate abuse and killing of several ducks.
In one surveillance video, a man can be seen following a duck near a fence. Police said the footage shows him catching the bird, stepping on it and remaining on top of it until it died.
Additional surveillance footage from the area reportedly showed the same man pursuing ducklings. Police said the ducklings were later found dead.
Pembroke Pines police had appealed to the public for help identifying the person seen in the footage. Investigators said the tip that led to the arrest came from someone in Davie who recognized Antoine from the department’s identification flyer. Officers subsequently took him into custody without incident.
Antoine was already on probation in connection with a 2024 felony criminal mischief case, according to records cited in local reporting. His probation was scheduled to continue through December 2028.
Pembroke Pines police previously described the animal cruelty investigation as a serious matter. Capt. Christopher Rogers said the department was treating the incident as a crime and wanted to determine whether there could be other victims.
Antoine was being processed for the animal-abuse and probation charges and was expected to be taken to the Broward County main jail, according to police.
