A visit to one of New York City’s most important places of remembrance took an unexpected turn after a man allegedly sprayed red paint across engraved victims’ names at the 9/11 Memorial in Lower Manhattan. The incident prompted swift action from security personnel and police, while the man’s alleged actions drew criticism from officials and visitors.

Authorities identified the suspect as 31-year-old Johnathan Tijerina, who was arrested following the incident on October 26, 2026. Investigators said the vandalism took place along the North Pool, where the names of people killed in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks are engraved into stone panels.

The incident came just weeks after the United States marked the 25th anniversary of the attacks, adding to the public reaction surrounding the alleged defacement.

What happened at the 9/11 Memorial?

According to the investigation, Tijerina allegedly used red spray paint to write a political message across portions of the memorial panels, covering some of the engraved names.

The message reportedly read, “Just Stop Killing Kids,” promoting a gun-control campaign associated with Tijerina. Videos circulating on social media appeared to show him carrying out the act and recording himself at the site.

A security officer reportedly witnessed the incident and confronted him. According to the criminal complaint, Tijerina acknowledged responsibility when questioned.

Authorities said he had two cans of spray paint with him.

The memorial’s security staff responded quickly, and law enforcement took the suspect into custody. The affected area was subsequently cleaned, allowing the memorial to return to its commemorative condition.

    Who is Johnathan Tijerina?

Tijerina has been associated with a group called Just Stop Killing Kids, which advocates for stricter gun-control measures.

The group’s stated demands include universal background checks for gun purchases and a nationwide gun registry. Its social media presence has described Tijerina as a civil resistance organizer who has previously been arrested in multiple states.

The alleged act at the memorial appears to have been intended to draw attention to those political demands. However, using a site dedicated to remembering victims of terrorism as a setting for a protest quickly became a separate issue, with public criticism focusing on the decision to mark the memorial itself.

Political advocacy and public demonstrations can take many forms, but defacing a memorial raises questions about respect for victims, their families and the people who visit to remember them.

    Charges filed after the arrest

Tijerina was taken into custody and transferred to Manhattan Central Booking for processing.

Police said he faces charges of criminal mischief and making graffiti. The criminal complaint also reportedly included possession of graffiti instruments.

The charges relate to the alleged damage to the memorial and the materials used in the incident. They are accusations, not a determination of guilt, and the case must proceed through the legal system.

The incident was reportedly captured on video, and investigators had witness information as part of their account of what happened.

    Officials condemn the defacement

The incident drew strong reactions from New York leaders, who emphasized the memorial’s importance to families, survivors and the wider community.

New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin said the site is a sacred place and that defacing it is unacceptable regardless of the cause being promoted.

Former New York Governor George Pataki also condemned the incident, describing the act as disgraceful and expressing disgust at seeing victims’ names covered in paint.

Their responses reflected a broader concern that the memorial should remain a place for remembrance rather than a backdrop for political stunts.

The memorial honors the people killed in the September 11 attacks in 2001, as well as those who died in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. For many families, the engraved names represent a lasting connection to loved ones whose lives were cut short.

Memorial restored after a rapid response

Officials with the National September 11 Memorial & Museum said security staff and law enforcement addressed the incident promptly.

The organization described the vandalism as brief and said the affected area was immediately restored to its commemorative condition.

There were no reports of permanent damage to the memorial panels in the initial coverage of the incident.

The rapid cleanup meant the visible graffiti did not remain on the site for an extended period. Even so, the incident raised concerns about protecting a public landmark that carries profound historical and emotional significance.

The memorial is designed as a place where visitors can reflect quietly, read the names of those who died and pay their respects. Its open setting makes security and preservation important responsibilities for the staff overseeing the grounds.

Why the memorial holds such significance

The National September 11 Memorial occupies the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan. Its two reflecting pools mark the footprints of the original Twin Towers, while bronze panels surrounding the pools carry the names of the victims.

The site commemorates 2,983 people killed in the September 11, 2001, attacks and the February 26, 1993, World Trade Center bombing.

For survivors, relatives and visitors, the memorial is more than a tourist destination. It provides a physical space to remember those who died and recognize the lasting effects of the attacks on families, first responders and communities.

That role helps explain why the alleged vandalism provoked such a strong response. Covering the engraved names with paint affected a place specifically created to preserve the memory of the victims.

A political message with legal consequences

The arrest highlights the consequences that can follow when political protest crosses into alleged property damage.

Tijerina’s group’s demands concern gun policy, including background checks and a national registry. Those proposals remain subjects of public debate, but the criminal case centers on the alleged defacement of the memorial and the conduct described by investigators.

As the legal proceedings move forward, the evidence and charges will be addressed through the court process.

For the memorial’s visitors and the families connected to the names engraved there, the immediate concern was ensuring that the site could continue serving its intended purpose.

The paint has been removed, and the affected area has been restored. But the incident has renewed attention on the responsibility to protect places dedicated to remembrance, particularly those that carry such deep meaning for a nation still living with the consequences of September 11.
