INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — A 26-year-old man has been arrested following an encounter with Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) officers in downtown Indianapolis that left an officer injured, according to police.
The incident happened around 6:45 a.m. Thursday, October 8, in the 900 block of Fort Wayne Avenue, near East Sahm and Alabama streets. Officers were initially dispatched to investigate a report of a possible vehicle theft in progress.
When officers arrived, they located two people who reportedly matched the descriptions provided by the caller. During the investigation, officers made contact with a 26-year-old man who allegedly provided a false name.
Police said the situation escalated when the man, who was inside a vehicle, shifted the car into drive. A struggle followed as an officer attempted to respond to the situation.
According to investigators, the man bit the officer’s finger with significant force before driving away. The officer was reportedly dragged a short distance as the vehicle moved, turning the encounter into a physical confrontation with potentially serious consequences.
The officer sustained multiple injuries and was taken to a local hospital for evaluation. Police said the officer was released later that same day.
Suspect Located Days After the Incident
Investigators continued working to locate the suspect after the incident. On Sunday, October 11, officers found the 26-year-old man and arrested him on a warrant related to the case.
The preliminary charges include battery resulting in injury to a public safety official, criminal recklessness and two counts of resisting law enforcement.
The allegations involve both the reported physical assault on the officer and the circumstances surrounding the man’s attempt to drive away during the encounter. The listed charges are preliminary, and the case may proceed through the court system as investigators and prosecutors review the evidence.
Investigation and Legal Proceedings
The incident highlights the risks officers can face when responding to suspected vehicle thefts, particularly when an encounter escalates unexpectedly. A vehicle moving while an officer is attempting to intervene can create additional dangers for both law enforcement personnel and people nearby.
At this stage, the charges reflect the allegations outlined by police. An arrest and the filing of preliminary charges do not establish guilt, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Further details about the suspect’s identity, court proceedings and any additional developments were not included in the information released by police.
