A Humboldt, Tennessee, mother is facing first-degree murder and firearm charges after police say her 2-year-old daughter was fatally shot last week.

Ephreana Brady was taken into custody after officers responded Aug. 27 to a home on Campbell Street following a report of an unresponsive child who was bleeding. When officers arrived, they found Brady on the front porch holding her daughter, who had suffered a gunshot wound.

Police said Brady was also holding a handgun to her own head. Officers were able to take the firearm from her and remove the child from the scene.

The girl was transported by ambulance to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital, where she later died from her injuries, according to investigators.

Police said their investigation determined that Brady was responsible for the shooting that resulted in her daughter’s death.

Brady has been charged with first-degree murder and employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony. She is being held at the Gibson County Jail on a $2 million bond, according to the latest available court information. She is scheduled to appear for arraignment on Sept. 2.

Authorities have not publicly released a possible motive or additional details about what led to the shooting. The Humboldt Police Department, with assistance from the 28th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, is continuing to investigate the case.

Anyone with information about the incident can contact the Humboldt Police Department at 731-784-1322 or Crime Stoppers at 731-424-8477.

Brady remains presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
