WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — South Florida residents are in for another rough afternoon, with a mix of dangerous heat and the chance of strong thunderstorms as the region heads into the weekend.
A Heat Advisory will be active from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. across Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Air temperatures are expected to climb into the low-to-mid 90s, but with humidity factored in, it will feel more like 105 to 110 degrees in many spots. A handful of areas could briefly feel even hotter than that.
The advisory only officially covers Miami-Dade and Broward, but forecasters note that the risk of heat-related illness stretches across the entire South Florida region today. Anyone planning to be outside for a while should keep water on hand, take breaks indoors or in shaded areas, and try to avoid heavy physical activity when the sun is at its strongest.
By midday, attention shifts to the sky. Winds blowing from the south to southwest are expected to hold the Atlantic sea breeze near the coastline, which will push most of the storm activity toward interior and southeastern parts of the state. Southeast Florida is looking at a 50% to 70% chance of rain, while Southwest Florida’s odds are somewhat lower.
A few of today’s storms have the potential to turn strong. There’s enough instability in the atmosphere to fuel storm development, and dry air pockets overhead could help some storms produce sudden, powerful wind gusts. Forecasters aren’t ruling out an isolated severe storm, with damaging winds being the main hazard to watch for.
The strongest storms are also expected to bring heavy rain and frequent lightning. Downpours could lead to localized flooding, especially in low-lying or poorly drained neighborhoods across the region.
