CARSON, Calif. — A body recovered from the Dominguez Channel in Carson has been identified as that of a young girl believed to be between 6 and 13 years old, while investigators continue looking into a second death reported nearby the following day.
The girl was found Tuesday, Sept. 1, near the Dominguez Channel Bike Path in the area of South Avalon Boulevard and the Victoria Golf Course. Authorities were called shortly after noon after a person at the golf course reported seeing what appeared to be a body floating downstream.
Emergency crews recovered the body from the channel. Authorities said the remains were in a severe state of decomposition, making the investigation and identification more difficult. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has not publicly released the girl’s name.
The Medical Examiner’s information describes the girl as having brown hair and brown eyes. Her exact identity has not been released, and the cause and manner of death have not been determined.
The discovery came one day before another body was found near the same channel. On Wednesday morning, deputies responded to the 2100 block of East Sepulveda Boulevard after receiving a report of an unresponsive person near the waterway.
The second victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have described the person as an adult, but few additional details have been released publicly. The location was roughly seven miles from where the girl’s body was recovered.
Both deaths are being investigated, but authorities have not established a connection between the two cases. A spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said there is currently no evidence linking the investigations.
The Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau is handling the investigations. Authorities have not announced a cause of death for either victim, and it remains unclear what led to either death.
The City of Carson and the Sheriff’s Department scheduled a briefing for Thursday morning at the Carson Sheriff’s Station to provide an update on the two investigations.
