A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a deadly abduction in Miami-Dade County, where witnesses reported seeing suspects wearing shirts marked “Police” before forcing a man into a vehicle.

Devorise Carl Johnson faces several serious charges, including first-degree murder and kidnapping with a weapon or firearm, according to an arrest form. The case involves the death of 22-year-old Eddrick Bethune, who investigators say was abducted from a North Miami apartment complex in early October.

Authorities said the incident began shortly after midnight on October 4 at the Aliro Apartments, located west of Florida International University’s Biscayne Bay campus. A shooting was reported at the complex before Bethune was taken from the property.

His body was later discovered in South Miami-Dade County near Southwest 216th Street and Southwest 189th Avenue, bringing the investigation to a second location across the county.

Investigators have been working to piece together what happened between the reported shooting, the abduction and the discovery of Bethune’s body.

Witnesses Reported Gunfire and a Violent Abduction

Residents near the North Miami apartment complex described a frightening scene during the early-morning incident.

Some neighbors reported hearing dozens of gunshots, while video recorded at the scene appeared to show people climbing out of a third-floor window and escaping as the situation unfolded.

Witnesses also provided investigators with accounts of two men wearing shirts marked “Police.” According to those accounts, the men struggled with and beat another man before forcing him into the back seat of a vehicle.

The shirts reportedly bearing police markings have become a notable detail in the investigation. Clothing marked “Police” can create confusion during a fast-moving emergency, making witness accounts, video evidence and other investigative findings particularly important when authorities attempt to establish who was involved.

Investigators have not publicly established every detail of how the suspects approached the victim or what happened immediately after he was taken away.

Investigation Led Detectives to South Miami-Dade

The search for answers extended beyond North Miami after Bethune was found dead in a remote area of South Miami-Dade.

According to investigators, detectives later located a vehicle matching the description of the suspects’ car near the area where his body was discovered. The vehicle had been set on fire.

The discovery gave investigators another potential piece of evidence as they worked to connect the events at the apartment complex with the location where Bethune was found.

A burned vehicle can require additional forensic examination to determine whether identifying evidence remains and whether the vehicle can be linked to people or events under investigation. Such findings, however, must be established through investigative evidence rather than assumed from the vehicle’s condition alone.

Authorities have not provided a complete public account of the timeline between Bethune’s abduction and the discovery of the vehicle and his body.

Arrest Brings New Development in the Case

The arrest of Johnson marks a significant development in the investigation, which began with reports of gunfire and an apparent abduction at the North Miami apartment complex.

The charges listed in the arrest form include first-degree murder and kidnapping with a weapon or firearm. These are serious allegations, and the case will proceed through the criminal justice system.

An arrest and criminal charges do not, by themselves, establish guilt. Prosecutors must present evidence supporting the allegations, and the defendant is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless proven guilty in court.

Authorities have not publicly detailed all the evidence that led detectives to Johnson or fully explained the alleged roles of everyone involved.

    Questions Remain About the Abduction

Several aspects of the case remain important as the investigation moves forward, including the circumstances surrounding the initial shooting, how Bethune was taken from the apartment complex and the events leading to his death.

Witness accounts, available video footage, vehicle evidence and forensic findings may help investigators establish a clearer sequence of events.

The case has also drawn attention to the danger of situations in which individuals allegedly use clothing or markings that resemble official law enforcement identification. Residents who witness a violent incident should prioritize their own safety and contact emergency services rather than approaching suspected offenders.

For Bethune’s family and the community, the arrest represents a new stage in a case that began with a violent disturbance and ended with a young man’s death.

The investigation remains focused on determining exactly what happened that October night and establishing accountability through the legal process.
