A Florida man who was driving a newly purchased Chevrolet Corvette at extreme speeds before crashing into a Jeep carrying an older couple has been sentenced to 47 years in prison.

Scott P. March, 64, received the sentence Wednesday in Volusia County after entering no-contest pleas to two counts of vehicular homicide and two counts of DUI manslaughter in connection with the deaths of Thomas Lauck and Julia Ann Lauck.

The crash happened on Nov. 1, 2025, on State Road A1A in Ormond-by-the-Sea. Investigators said March was traveling at 110 mph when he attempted to pass the Laucks’ Jeep in a no-passing zone where the posted speed limit was 45 mph.

Data recovered from the Corvette showed that its speed had reached 147 mph just seconds before the collision. March then struck the rear of the Jeep, sending it out of control and causing it to overturn.

Thomas Lauck, 72, died at the scene. Julia Lauck, 73, was seriously injured and later died at a hospital.

    Alcohol was also a factor

The investigation found that March was intoxicated when the crash occurred. His blood-alcohol concentration was measured at approximately 0.13%, significantly above Florida’s legal limit of 0.08%.

Witnesses also described a pattern of dangerous driving before the collision, including speeding, passing vehicles where passing was prohibited and narrowly avoiding other traffic.

The combination of speed and alcohol became central to the prosecution’s case.

The sentence could keep March in prison for decades

March entered what is known as an open no-contest plea, meaning the final sentence was left to the judge rather than being fixed through a negotiated plea agreement.

Circuit Judge Christian Miller ultimately imposed a total sentence of 47 years. The punishment was structured in two consecutive blocks of roughly 23.7 years, with credit given for time already served.

March’s defense had asked for a substantially shorter prison term, while prosecutors sought a sentence that would reflect the severity of the crash and the loss suffered by the Lauck family.

March also addressed the court before sentencing and apologized while asking for leniency. His defense pointed to personal difficulties and health problems he had experienced.

He has 30 days to appeal the sentence.

The Corvette had been purchased the same day

One of the striking details surrounding the case is that March had purchased the Corvette on the day of the crash.

The vehicle was reportedly worth well into six figures. What began as the purchase of a new sports car ended only hours later in a fatal collision on the coastal road.

The crash left the Laucks’ family dealing with the sudden loss of a couple who had spent much of their lives together.

    Family remembers Thomas and Julia

Members of the Lauck family spoke during Wednesday’s sentencing about the lasting effect of the deaths.

Relatives described the couple as deeply devoted to one another and emphasized how abruptly their lives were taken away.

Julia was remembered as someone who enjoyed quiet moments with her husband, including watching sunsets and waves near the beach and caring for her gardens. She was also a devoted grandmother who took great joy in her family.

Thomas was remembered for his calm nature and generosity. He enjoyed outdoor activities such as fishing, spending time at the beach and searching for treasures with a metal detector.

For their relatives, the sentence cannot undo what happened on A1A, but it brings the criminal case to a major conclusion.

The 47-year prison term means March is expected to spend the vast majority of his remaining years behind bars for a crash that investigators say began with excessive speed, reckless driving and alcohol.
