A 54-year-old Chicago man has died after he was struck by a pickup truck during a chain-reaction crash in the city’s Garfield Ridge neighborhood, with police still searching for the driver who left the scene.
Juan Martin Marquez Luna was riding an e-bike when he was hit around 5:15 a.m. Monday, Sept. 14, near the 5600 block of South Archer Avenue at Laramie Avenue, according to Chicago police. He was taken to Christ Hospital in critical condition but died the following day. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified him as the victim.
Investigators said the crash began when a blue pickup truck collided with a black sedan that was making a turn at the intersection. The pickup then struck Marquez Luna before the driver fled the area.
The medical examiner later determined that Marquez Luna died from multiple blunt-force injuries sustained in the crash. Police have not publicly identified a suspect, and the investigation remains ongoing.
The scene showed the force of the collision, with debris and a damaged e-bike left in the roadway. The pickup truck was also heavily damaged and was photographed at the scene surrounded by police tape.
The crash has drawn renewed attention to the Archer Avenue and Laramie Avenue intersection. In May 2025, an 84-year-old woman, Maria Ochoa Flores, was killed at the same intersection after being involved in a two-vehicle collision.
Marquez Luna’s death also adds to a series of fatal crashes involving people riding bicycles or electric bikes in the Chicago area this year. Earlier in 2026, cyclists including Roman Havelka, Damian Gomez and Riley O’Neil were killed in separate crashes involving vehicles in Chicago, according to previous local reports.
For now, the circumstances surrounding the hit-and-run remain under investigation. Authorities have not announced an arrest in connection with Marquez Luna’s death, and additional details about the investigation had not been released.
