A child custody exchange in Allen turned deadly Friday evening when a confrontation between two men ended in gunfire, leaving one man dead and another injured, police said.
Officers were called to a shopping center along State Highway 121 near North Watters Road shortly before 6 p.m. after reports of a shooting. Investigators said the incident happened during an exchange involving children and their parents.
According to the preliminary investigation, the two men involved were the children’s father and their mother’s boyfriend. A confrontation broke out between them before both men were shot.
The mother’s boyfriend was taken to a nearby hospital with a gunshot wound but later died from his injuries, authorities said.
The children’s father, who police identified as the suspect, was also hospitalized. His injury was described as non-life-threatening, and he was taken into custody without incident while receiving medical treatment.
The shooting took place in the parking area of a shopping center near State Highway 121. Police have not publicly released details about what led to the confrontation or explained how the shooting unfolded.
The children were present and witnessed the gunfire, but police said they were not physically injured.
Authorities have not released the names of the men involved while family members are being notified.
