MUSCATINE, Iowa — A 38-year-old Coralville man was arrested Monday after police said he allegedly robbed a U.S. Bank branch in Muscatine.

Officers with the Muscatine Police Department responded to the U.S. Bank at 1800 Park Ave. at about 9:05 a.m. after receiving a report of the robbery. Police said the suspect had already left the area when officers arrived.

A Muscatine County deputy later spotted a vehicle believed to be connected to the incident traveling north on Highway 38 and requested assistance from additional law enforcement agencies.

An Iowa State Patrol trooper stopped the vehicle just north of Highway 6. Law enforcement then arrested Mathew Rawson, 38, of Coralville, according to police.

Rawson was charged with one count of armed robbery, with additional charges pending. He was taken to the Muscatine County Jail.

The U.S. Bank branch involved in the investigation is located at 1800 Park Ave. in Muscatine. U.S. Bank lists the location as its Quad Cities Muscatine branch.

The arrest came several weeks after Rawson was arrested in Coralville in connection with an alleged ATM-damaging incident. A report published Aug. 5 said police accused Rawson of using a pickaxe and sledgehammer to damage an ATM.

According to the information provided in the earlier case, Rawson later pleaded guilty to second-degree criminal mischief and received a suspended five-year sentence and three years of probation.

Police have not publicly released additional details about what was allegedly taken during Monday’s robbery or whether anyone was injured.

Anyone with information about the Muscatine robbery is asked to contact Lt. David O’Connor with the Muscatine Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit at 563-263-9922, ext. 608. The department’s official records division lists the police department’s main number as 563-263-9922.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges or information may be released as the case develops.
