INDIANAPOLIS — A child died Tuesday night after being struck by a vehicle in the driveway of a home on Indianapolis’ southwest side, police said.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers and medics were called to the 5300 block of West Southport Road shortly before 9:40 p.m. Sept. 8 after receiving a report that a pedestrian had been hit.

When officers arrived, they found the child suffering from injuries after being struck by a vehicle. The child was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash happened in an area with homes on larger properties west of Mann Road and near the White River.

Police said everyone involved remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. As part of the investigation, the driver’s blood will be drawn as required under Indiana law.

Authorities have not said whether the driver will face criminal charges. No information identifying the child or driver had been released as of the latest update.

Capt. Rob Rider said investigators and those responding to the scene were deeply affected by the child’s death.

“Our hearts are just truly shattered for the loss of this young life,” Rider said.

Police have not released further details about how the child was struck or what led to the crash. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities said the information available so far is preliminary.

Additional details may be released as investigators continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident.
