Chicago is preparing for an unusually busy weekend as Mexican Independence Day celebrations, concerts, sports and festivals bring large crowds to downtown and surrounding neighborhoods.

With several major events taking place at the same time, city officials are warning that traffic conditions could become difficult enough to require temporary restrictions on vehicle access in parts of the Loop.

People heading downtown are being encouraged to use public transportation rather than drive. Officials say any restrictions would depend on traffic and crowd conditions as the weekend unfolds.

If vehicle access into the Loop is limited, officials have identified several locations that could serve as access points, including Halsted Street at Washington Boulevard, Madison Street and Jackson Boulevard, as well as Division Street at LaSalle Street, Roosevelt Road at Canal Street, Taylor Street at Desplaines Street, and 18th Street at State Street and Indiana Avenue.

El Grito brings thousands to Grant Park

One of the weekend’s largest events is El Grito Chicago, which returns to Grant Park’s Butler Field on Saturday and Sunday.

The two-day celebration runs from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. each day and includes live music, Mexican food, cultural activities and performances. The event will also conclude Sunday evening with an El Grito civic ceremony.

Jackson Boulevard is scheduled to close between Columbus Drive and DuSable Lake Shore Drive for the festival. Public transportation is being strongly encouraged for people attending the event.

The festival’s return is particularly significant after it was paused in 2025 while organizers worked on safety and community planning.

Mexican Independence Day celebrations will also extend beyond downtown.

In Little Village, the El Grito 5K Family Run/Walk is scheduled for Sunday morning, followed by the annual 26th Street Mexican Independence Day Parade. The parade is scheduled to begin around noon near the Little Village Arch and continue along 26th Street toward Kostner Avenue. A separate Mexican Independence Day parade is also scheduled along Commercial Avenue on Sunday afternoon.

Heavy traffic expected around Northerly Island

The lakefront could be another major congestion point Saturday.

Chief Keef is scheduled to perform at Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island on Saturday night. The venue is warning concertgoers to expect heavy traffic, with another event taking place at Soldier Field nearby. The venue says access to Northerly Island is limited and that road closures or changes to normal traffic routes could affect travel.

The weekend’s activity is not limited to concerts.

The Sonic Pavilion Festival is scheduled at Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park Saturday and Sunday afternoon, adding another large gathering in the heart of downtown.

Meanwhile, Soldier Field will host the Chicago Football Classic on Saturday. On Sunday, the Chicago Fire will face the New England Revolution at Soldier Field. The match is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., according to Soldier Field’s current event listing.

Little Village and South Side events add to weekend activity

Crowds will also be moving through neighborhoods outside the Loop.

The annual 26th Street Mexican Independence Day Parade is expected to draw participants and spectators to Little Village on Sunday. Community organizations are already promoting participation in the event, which is scheduled to begin at noon.

The Commercial Avenue Mexican Independence Day Parade is scheduled for Sunday afternoon, traveling south from 87th Street toward 100th Street.

With multiple events happening across the city, drivers could encounter temporary street closures, detours and heavier-than-usual traffic well beyond the immediate event locations.

Officials urge visitors to plan ahead

The city has advised people attending weekend events to check for traffic and street-closure updates before leaving home.

Chicago’s ChiStreetWork system tracks special events, road closures and other roadway impacts across the city, although conditions can change as events approach.

For visitors heading into the Loop, using CTA may be the simplest option, particularly during the busiest portions of Saturday and Sunday.

The combination of major downtown celebrations, lakefront concerts, sporting events and neighborhood parades means traffic conditions could change quickly. Anyone driving into the city should allow extra travel time and be prepared for temporary changes to normal routes.
