A Centreville, Virginia, couple died in a shooting at their home Wednesday evening while their three children were inside the residence, according to Fairfax County police.

Brandon Brown, 31, and his wife, Lavinia Brown, 31, were found dead after officers responded to their home in the 6300 block of Sharps Drive at about 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 9. Police said a family member called 911 to report a shooting.

When officers entered the home, they found both Brandon and Lavinia with apparent gunshot wounds. Fairfax County Fire and Rescue personnel pronounced them dead at the scene.

Investigators said their preliminary findings indicate that Brandon Brown shot his wife before shooting himself. Police are investigating the case as a domestic-related murder-suicide.

A firearm and cartridge casings were recovered from the residence, police said.

The couple’s three children were also inside the home when the shooting occurred. None of the children was physically injured, according to authorities. Family members are caring for them following the deaths.

Police said there is no ongoing threat to the public. Residents in the area were advised to expect a police presence as detectives continued working at the scene.

The investigation remains active, and the motive has not been publicly established. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is expected to conduct autopsies to confirm the causes and manners of death.

Police victim services advocates are also working with the family following the deaths.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have information relevant to the investigation to contact the Fairfax County Police Department.

For anyone experiencing domestic violence or concerned about someone who may be at risk, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is available at 800-799-SAFE (7233). Support is also available by texting LOVEIS to 22522.
