More than a month after Sophie Lee’s death, the grief surrounding her loss remains deeply felt by the people who knew and loved her. On Friday evening, friends, relatives, LGBTQ+ advocates and community members gathered in Baltimore’s Charles Village neighborhood to remember the 27-year-old transgender woman and call for justice.

The gathering brought together at least 50 people, united by their memories of Lee and their determination to keep her story in the public eye. For her family, the evening was about more than mourning. It was also an opportunity to remind the community of the person behind the tragedy.

Sophie was someone who made others feel welcome, her loved ones said. She cared for people, shared what she had and offered help to those who needed it.

“She would give you anything. She would open her house to whoever needed a place to stay; she would feed them,” her mother, Denise Jackson, recalled.

Margaret Little, Lee’s mother, also spoke about her daughter’s generous spirit and the love she showed to others.

“Sophie was so precious, she was beautiful, she loved everybody. She was a caregiver, and she loved to take care of others,” Little said.

Those memories helped shape the march, turning the gathering into both a tribute to Lee’s life and a public appeal for answers about her killing.

Family Holds on to Memories While Seeking Answers

For Lee’s loved ones, the pain of losing her has been accompanied by frustration that the person suspected of being involved has not been identified publicly by name or taken into custody.

Little expressed anger that the person wanted in connection with the killing remains at large. Although investigators have released a sketch, the family is hoping someone will recognize the individual and provide information that moves the investigation forward.

Her words reflected the difficult position facing the family: trying to remember the joy Lee brought into their lives while waiting for answers about why she was killed.

The family has continued to ask anyone with relevant information to speak with police. They hope that sharing the suspect’s sketch more widely will help investigators identify the person they are seeking.

For relatives and friends, accountability matters not only because of the loss they have suffered, but also because they want to see the case move forward.

    What Happened to Sophie Lee?

Lee was found with fatal gunshot wounds in Baltimore’s Charles Village neighborhood on September 11, 2026. Police located her in the area of North Calvert Street and the surrounding 2400 block, where investigators began looking into the circumstances of her death.

Detectives have been seeking information that could help establish what happened and identify the person responsible.

On October 8, Baltimore police released a sketch of a man wanted in connection with Lee’s killing and asked the public for help identifying him. The release gave the investigation a new avenue for gathering information, although the suspect had not been publicly identified by name in the available reports.

Authorities have not announced that Lee’s death was a hate crime, and a motive has not been publicly established. Her identity as a transgender woman has nevertheless made the case particularly painful for members of Baltimore’s LGBTQ+ community, many of whom see the march as an opportunity to stand together and demand answers.

LGBTQ+ Advocates Call for Safety and Equality

The march also drew attention to the concerns of transgender residents and the broader LGBTQ+ community.

Renee Lau, a transgender rights advocate associated with Maryland Safe Haven, emphasized that transgender people deserve the same opportunity to live safely and participate in everyday community life as anyone else.

The message was central to the gathering: Lee was a daughter, a friend and a person whose life mattered to the people around her. Her loved ones want her remembered for her generosity and personality, not only for the circumstances of her death.

Maryland Safe Haven, an organization that supports LGBTQ+ people through services and community resources, had ties to Lee. The organization has also helped draw attention to the impact her death has had on those who knew her.

For attendees, standing together offered a way to support Lee’s family while sending a wider message about the importance of protecting transgender people from violence.

Police Ask Anyone With Information to Come Forward

Baltimore police continue to seek information from anyone who may recognize the person depicted in the released sketch or know something about Lee’s killing.

Investigators are asking members of the public to contact Baltimore Police homicide detectives at 410-396-2100. Information can also be provided anonymously through Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7-LOCKUP.

An $8,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and charges in the case.

Even a detail that may initially seem unimportant could help investigators piece together what happened. Authorities are encouraging anyone with relevant information to come forward rather than assume someone else has already reported it.

A Community Determined to Remember Sophie

As the march moved through Charles Village, the gathering reflected both the depth of the family’s grief and the strength of the support surrounding them.

For Lee’s relatives, friends and allies, remembering her means keeping alive the qualities they cherished: her kindness, her willingness to help others and the connections she built with people around her.

Little said the turnout itself showed how much Lee meant to others. Seeing people gather in her honor offered a reminder that her life had touched people well beyond her immediate family.

The search for answers continues, but those who gathered Friday made one thing clear: they do not want Sophie Lee to be forgotten.

They are asking for justice for a loved one whose life ended far too soon, while urging anyone who knows something about her killing to help bring the investigation closer to a resolution.
