An 18-year-old in Maricopa, Arizona, is receiving widespread attention after giving his own shoes to an elderly stranger who was struggling with worn-out footwear. But what began as a simple act of kindness soon turned into something much more meaningful: a friendship with a man dealing with the recent loss of his wife.

Jordan Hope was on his way to the bank when he noticed the older man outside a Walgreens store. The man’s shoes were barely staying on his feet, and Hope felt he needed to do something.

Without waiting for recognition or praise, the teenager stopped his vehicle, took off his own slides and handed them to the man.

The encounter was recorded by Yareli Madrid, who later shared the video on Facebook. Her post quickly attracted attention, with viewers praising Hope for helping someone he had never met.

What made the moment especially meaningful was that Hope had no idea he was being filmed.

A Simple Decision That Changed Someone’s Day

Hope later explained that he had noticed how badly the man’s shoes fit and felt compelled to turn around and help him.

He described the decision as a moment of faith, saying he felt God was guiding him to approach the stranger and offer his footwear.

For Hope, giving away his shoes was only the beginning.

After initially leaving, he felt the need to check on the man again. He returned to Walgreens and found him inside the store, where the older man was trying to buy some candy.

Hope offered to pay for it. During their conversation, he learned that the man had lost his wife just two weeks earlier.

The discovery gave Hope a better understanding of what the stranger might have been going through. Beyond his worn-out shoes, the man was facing a painful personal loss and navigating life without his partner.

Hope said the situation deeply affected him. He believed the man needed someone willing to listen and spend time with him, not simply someone who could provide material help.

From Giving Shoes to Sharing a Meal

Hope wanted to do more than make a quick gesture and leave. He offered to take the man to Culver’s for lunch so they could spend some time together.

However, the man’s medical condition, which causes significant swelling in his legs, made getting into Hope’s car difficult.

Rather than abandoning the plan, Hope arranged a rideshare for him. He then met the man at the restaurant, picked up the food and followed him home afterward.

Once they arrived, Hope stayed for a while to talk.

For someone dealing with the recent death of a spouse, that time and companionship could mean as much as the practical assistance he received.

Hope explained that he wanted to make sure the man did not feel alone. His actions went beyond replacing damaged footwear or buying a meal. He made an effort to understand the man’s circumstances and offer support without making him feel uncomfortable about accepting help.

An Online Fundraiser Is Helping Meet His Needs

The encounter has also inspired people to contribute toward the older man’s everyday expenses.

Hope started a GoFundMe fundraiser titled Care for Mr. Roy in His Time of Need. The campaign is intended to help cover groceries, medicine, transportation and other necessities as the man adjusts to life after losing his wife.

As of October 10, the fundraiser showed approximately $3,655 raised toward its $5,500 goal, with 65 donations recorded. Contributions may continue to change as more people learn about the story.

Hope has also continued checking on the man by phone, making the connection more than a one-time act of generosity.

The response demonstrates how a small act can encourage others to help, too. What began with one person noticing another person’s struggle has developed into a broader effort to provide practical assistance during a difficult period.

Hope Says Young People Still Want to Make a Difference

Hope, a recent high school graduate, credited his parents, youth pastor and Christian faith for shaping his approach to helping others.

He also challenged the idea that younger generations are less concerned about the people around them. In his view, many young people want to contribute positively but need opportunities to put that concern into action.

Hope runs a computer-building business serving customers in Maricopa and Casa Grande. He hopes to continue growing his business while remaining involved in leadership at his church.

His encounter with the older man was not part of a planned campaign or organized community project. It started with noticing a problem and deciding not to ignore it.

The story has since reached people far beyond the Walgreens parking lot where it began.

For Hope, however, the most important outcome appears to be the relationship he has built with someone who needed support. By giving away his shoes, buying a small treat, arranging lunch and taking time to talk, he showed that helping another person does not always require a grand gesture.

Sometimes, it starts with stopping when everyone else might keep driving.
