Jakayla Ashanti Williams will spend the rest of her life in prison after pleading guilty to capital murder in the 2023 death of her newborn son, bringing a three-year case in Dothan, Alabama, to an end.

Williams, who was 18 when the child died, entered the guilty plea on Monday, September 14, 2026, just as jury selection was about to begin. Under the agreement, she was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, avoiding a potential death sentence.

The case began in August 2023, when Williams secretly gave birth at her home in Dothan. Police later said she placed the newborn in a dumpster at an apartment complex on the west side of the city. The dumpster was equipped with a commercial trash compactor.

Investigators said Williams initially gave her family a different account. She told them she had taken the baby to Southeast Health Medical Center and left him with an employee. When family members later went to the hospital looking for the child, hospital staff contacted police.

Investigators reviewed hospital surveillance and determined that Williams had not brought the newborn there as she had claimed. During a subsequent interview, police said Williams admitted that she had instead taken the baby to the apartment complex and placed him in the dumpster.

The dumpster was eventually transported to the Dothan landfill. Officers searching through its contents found the remains of a newborn inside a zipped duffel bag. The baby had been wrapped in a mattress protector, according to police records.

Police said Williams told investigators that she did not want to become a mother and was concerned about the financial responsibility of raising a child. Authorities also said she told them the infant was alive when she placed him in the dumpster.

A case that remained in court for three years

Williams was arrested in August 2023 and charged with capital murder. The case moved through the court system for years, with questions surrounding her mental state and whether the case would ultimately go to trial.

By late August 2026, prosecutors were preparing for a capital murder trial and were seeking permission for jurors to visit the location of the dumpster. The defense had also raised mental-health issues as part of its case.

    That trial never began.

Instead, Williams accepted the plea agreement on the morning jury selection was scheduled to start. Houston County District Attorney Russ Goodman had been pursuing the death penalty if the case went to trial and resulted in a conviction, according to local reporting. The agreement removed that possibility while securing a capital murder conviction and a sentence of life without parole.

The case also changed the conversation around Safe Haven options

The tragedy had consequences beyond the courtroom. In October 2023, Dothan officials voted to bring Safe Haven Baby Boxes to the city, providing another way for mothers to safely and anonymously surrender newborns under Alabama’s Safe Haven law.

Dothan now has at least three active Safe Haven Baby Boxes, while Alabama has 24 statewide as of September 2026.

The plea agreement closes the criminal case against Williams. She will remain in state custody for the rest of her life with no possibility of parole.
