A 98-year-old West Sunbury woman died Tuesday after her Subaru Legacy collided with a Freightliner truck at the intersection of Route 8 and Duffy Road in Brady Township, Butler County.
The crash happened around 11:30 a.m. Pennsylvania State Police said. Investigators determined that Helen Schubert was traveling west on Duffy Road when she went through the stop sign at the Route 8 intersection and entered the path of the approaching truck.
The Freightliner was being driven by a 55-year-old man from Ambridge. Police said the truck driver attempted to brake, but the vehicles collided. The impact sent both vehicles off the roadway, and the Freightliner struck a telephone pole.
Schubert was wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred, according to police, but she died as a result of her injuries.
The truck driver was also wearing a seat belt and suffered minor injuries. He was not taken to a hospital, police said.
Both vehicles were damaged beyond being driven and had to be towed from the scene.
The crash occurred at a busy junction where Duffy Road meets Route 8 in Brady Township. No other vehicles were reported to have been involved, and police have not announced any additional injuries.
The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation. The information released by police did not indicate that charges had been filed against the truck driver.
The fatal crash is another reminder of how quickly conditions at a highway intersection can change when a vehicle enters a main roadway. In this case, investigators said the truck driver tried to stop before the collision, but there was not enough time to avoid the Subaru.
Police have not released additional details about the investigation beyond the initial crash information.
