Two people were hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday afternoon after a shooting inside a vehicle on North Broad Street in North Philadelphia, according to police.
Officers responded around 2:49 p.m. to the 2900 block of North Broad Street for a reported double shooting. Investigators said a 36-year-old woman had suffered two gunshot wounds and was taken to Temple University Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition.
A 41-year-old man was also taken to Temple University Hospital after suffering a gunshot wound to the head that police said appeared to be self-inflicted. He was also listed in critical condition.
Investigators believe the shooting happened inside a black Volvo. The vehicle later crashed into a light pole and was towed from the area.
Witness accounts indicate that an argument took place inside the vehicle shortly before the gunfire. One witness described seeing a man arguing with a woman before shots were fired.
The gunfire also affected a nearby vehicle. A black SUV was struck, breaking its rear window. A child inside the SUV was not struck by a bullet but suffered minor injuries from shattered glass and was expected to be OK.
The incident happened during the afternoon as children were leaving school, adding to concerns among people who live and work in the area.
A local resident said the shooting occurred close to her home and described the incident as upsetting, particularly with children nearby.
Police have not released additional details about what led to the shooting or confirmed a motive. Investigators have also not released the identities of the two people involved.
The Philadelphia Police Department’s Shooting Investigation Group is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
