HOUSTON, Texas — Houston police are still searching for answers after a 35-year-old man was found dead inside a trash can at an apartment complex in Houston’s Third Ward, and no suspect has been charged in the case.
The body was discovered early Sunday morning in the parking lot of an apartment complex on the 3100 block of Anita Street after police received a report of gunfire and a person apparently trying to place a body into a trash can.
Officers arrived around 12:13 a.m. but could not speak with the person who made the emergency call. Police said the caller had blocked the number, preventing investigators from calling back, and no witness was waiting at the scene.
While checking the property, officers found an overturned trash can containing the man’s body.
Investigators initially could not determine how the man died. A trail of blood found near the trash can led officers toward an apartment in the complex, according to police.
Officers then attempted to make contact with someone inside the apartment. The person refused to come outside, prompting HPD’s Patrol Support Team to enter the unit using breaching equipment.
Two people were subsequently questioned as part of the investigation.
However, police have stressed that being questioned does not mean either person has been identified as a suspect. As of Monday, authorities confirmed that neither individual had been charged in connection with the death.
The investigation later established that the victim had suffered a gunshot wound, but police have not publicly identified a suspect.
Authorities have also not released additional details about what led to the shooting or how the victim’s body came to be inside the trash container.
The case remains under investigation, and HPD has not announced any arrests or charges related to the man’s death.
