A man died Monday afternoon after jumping from a moving Chicago Transit Authority Red Line train near the 69th Street station on the city’s South Side, according to Chicago police.

The incident happened shortly after 2:30 p.m. in the area of 69th Street. Police said the man jumped from the moving train and landed on the electrified third rail, leaving him incapacitated. He was then struck by an approaching train and pronounced dead at the scene.

The man’s age and identity had not been released as of Monday evening.

The incident caused a major disruption to Red Line service. CTA temporarily suspended trains between Garfield and 95th Street while emergency crews responded to the scene. Shuttle buses were also made available to help passengers traveling through the affected portion of the line.

CTA later reported that Red Line trains were operating again, although riders were warned to expect significant delays and crowding.

The 69th Street station is on the Red Line’s South Side branch, which runs between Howard and 95th/Dan Ryan. During the disruption, CTA advised affected passengers to consider alternate bus routes, including the No. 29 State, No. 30 South Chicago and No. 67 67th/69th/71st buses.

Chicago police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death. No further details about the man or what led him to jump from the train were immediately available.
