A 59-year-old Fairfield man was arrested Monday after police said he threatened people inside a San Benito Street home while armed with a firearm, leading to a standoff that lasted about 90 minutes.

Officers responded to a residence in the 1900 block of San Benito Street after receiving a report of an armed man threatening people inside the home. Police secured the area while they worked to determine who remained inside.

The person who initially contacted police was able to get outside. Officers were then told that a dependent adult was still inside the residence with the armed man.

As police continued their response, drone operators observed the man putting a rifle outside the home while he remained inside, according to investigators.

The man was later identified as David Scott Warburton.

Crisis negotiators established contact with Warburton by phone and continued speaking with him as officers maintained a perimeter around the residence. After roughly 90 minutes, Warburton came out of the home and surrendered to police.

The dependent adult inside the residence was not injured.

The incident also prompted a temporary shelter-in-place order for people in the surrounding neighborhood. Residents were instructed to remain indoors and avoid the area while officers handled the situation. The order was lifted after police took the suspect into custody.

Police recovered a rifle and a shotgun from the residence.

Warburton was arrested on suspicion of making criminal threats. Current booking information shows he was taken into custody by Fairfield police Monday evening.

No injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
