A wet weather pattern is expected to continue across parts of the Gulf Coast and Florida this week, with repeated thunderstorms bringing periods of heavy rain and a risk of localized flooding.

Forecasters are watching an active pattern that is allowing moisture to remain in place across the Southeast. As storms develop during the afternoon and evening, some could move slowly or repeatedly pass over the same locations, increasing rainfall totals in a short period.

The National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center currently has areas of the Southeast under a risk for excessive rainfall, while its latest forecast calls for numerous showers and thunderstorms across the Gulf Coast and Florida Peninsula on Tuesday. Isolated flash flooding remains possible, particularly where heavier storms develop.

Florida could see another round of strong storms

Florida is expected to remain one of the wetter areas as the week begins. The National Weather Service office in Miami said scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected each day into early this week.

The strongest storms could produce intense downpours and frequent lightning. Slow-moving storms combined with high rainfall rates could also create localized flooding, particularly in urban locations and areas with poor drainage.

The threat is already showing up in parts of northern Florida. The National Weather Service issued flash flood warnings Sunday night for portions of Marion and Suwannee counties after thunderstorms produced roughly 2 to 3 inches of rain, with additional rainfall possible.

Gulf Coast remains vulnerable to repeated downpours

The unsettled weather is not expected to be limited to Florida. The Gulf Coast and Florida Peninsula are expected to see numerous showers and thunderstorms Tuesday, according to the Weather Prediction Center.

While widespread major flooding is not currently expected, isolated flash flooding could develop where storms repeatedly affect the same areas. Forecasters note that the combination of heavy rainfall and slow-moving storms can quickly overwhelm drainage systems.

The latest outlook also keeps a marginal excessive-rainfall risk across portions of the Southeast and North Florida through the early part of the week.

    Thunderstorm chances could remain elevated

For residents and travelers across the Gulf Coast, the unsettled pattern means rain and thunderstorms could interrupt outdoor plans through the week.

Storms will not necessarily affect every location at the same time. Some communities may see brief periods of heavy rain, while nearby areas remain dry. However, storms that stall or repeatedly track over the same area could produce locally significant rainfall.

In South Florida, forecasters are also expecting temperatures to remain in the lower 90s, helping maintain enough daytime heating to support daily shower and thunderstorm development.

Residents in areas prone to flooding should keep an eye on updated local forecasts, particularly during periods of stronger thunderstorms. Motorists should also use caution around flooded roads, as even relatively short periods of intense rainfall can cause water to collect quickly in low-lying and poorly drained areas.

The unsettled pattern is expected to continue into the coming days, with additional rounds of showers and thunderstorms possible across the Gulf Coast and Florida.
