Police are searching for an unidentified person accused of grabbing a 6-year-old girl and attempting to take her into a subway station in Upper Manhattan.

The incident happened around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 29, at the Inwood-207th Street subway station mezzanine, according to the NYPD.

The girl was with her 36-year-old mother when the suspect approached them from behind. Police said the suspect grabbed the child and tried to flee with her into the subway.

    The attempt was unsuccessful.

The child later described the frightening encounter, saying she was scared and believed she might not see her mother again. Her mother also confronted the suspect and told the person to let go of her daughter.

The suspect eventually fled the station and boarded a southbound A train, according to police.

Emergency medical personnel responded and treated the girl at the scene. Police said the child was not seriously injured.

The incident has left the family shaken. The girl told NBC New York that she now holds onto her mother when they ride the subway because she is afraid something similar could happen again.

Police have released surveillance images as they continue trying to identify the person involved. As of the latest police information, no suspect has been publicly identified and no arrest has been announced.

Anyone who may have information about the incident is asked to contact NYPD Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). Tips can also be submitted through the NYPD Crime Stoppers website.
