A 16-year-old Valley High School student has died nearly a week after she was shot while waiting near a Jefferson County Public Schools bus stop in Louisville.
Dannady Greene was shot on the morning of Aug. 25 near Beech Street and Wyandotte Avenue in the Park DuValle neighborhood. She was taken to UofL Hospital in critical condition and died at 5:37 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31, according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office. Her death has been ruled a homicide.
Greene was waiting near the bus stop when the shooting occurred at about 8 a.m. Police said a vehicle pulled up and someone inside attempted to engage the teenager in a physical confrontation. Greene ran from the encounter toward her home before she was shot.
Investigators have continued following leads in the case, but no arrests had been announced as of Monday. Louisville Metro Police are asking anyone who may have information about the shooting to come forward.
The shooting has left Greene’s classmates and friends struggling with the loss. Over the weekend, a group of teenage girls gathered at the bus stop for a vigil, bringing balloons, teddy bears and handwritten messages in memory of their friend.
The girls wore yellow as a symbol of peace and talked about Greene’s personality and the impact she had on those around her. For some students, returning to school while knowing their friend was fighting for her life made the situation especially difficult.
Sarah Wade, whose teenage daughter was among those affected, helped organize the gathering. She said watching young people deal with the aftermath of gun violence has been painful for families.
The tragedy has also renewed concerns about safety at school bus stops across Louisville. Jefferson County Public Schools has roughly 10,000 bus stops, and the Aug. 25 shooting has drawn renewed attention to how students are protected while waiting for transportation.
Councilwoman Tammy Hawkins has called for additional safety measures and said she has discussed the possibility of moving some bus stops to locations such as churches, where students could have a safer place to wait. Community leaders have also urged families and officials to take action following the shooting.
The incident has brought back memories of other violence involving students and school bus stops. In January 2019, 18-year-old Valley High School student Richard Harper was shot while waiting at a bus stop. In August 2025, Redaja Williams was fatally shot while walking her daughter to a JCPS bus stop.
The latest shooting has added to those concerns as Louisville officials continue to investigate what led to Greene’s death.
