Two people were killed and eight others were wounded after multiple shooters opened fire on a large gathering in Trenton early Sunday morning, authorities said.
The shooting happened shortly after midnight on the 100 block of Locust Street in the Wilbur section of East Trenton. Trenton police responded to reports of gunfire at about 12:25 a.m. and found multiple people suffering from gunshot wounds.
According to the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office, a 33-year-old woman and a 42-year-old man died from their injuries. The eight other victims—two women and six men between the ages of 23 and 43—were taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center and later reported to be stabilized.
Investigators said a large gathering was underway on the residential block when multiple suspects approached and began firing into the crowd. About 100 people were believed to be at the gathering, while city officials described the event as involving hundreds of people.
More than 50 spent shell casings were recovered across the block, and several vehicles were struck by gunfire, according to investigators.
No arrests reported as investigation continues
The Mercer County Homicide Task Force and Trenton Police Department are investigating the shooting. Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage and working to identify people who may have witnessed the gunfire or have information about those responsible.
No arrests had been announced as of Sunday.
Authorities have not established a motive or explained what led to the shooting. Investigators are asking anyone with information, photos or video from the gathering to come forward.
The shooting also prompted questions about the size of the gathering and the police response.
Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora described the event as an unauthorized gathering on a residential street and said the city would look at additional measures to prevent similar large gatherings.
City officials also plan to work with residents and community partners in the Wilbur section following the shooting, with an emphasis on preventing further violence or retaliation.
Gusciora said one of the men who died had been working to rebuild his life after returning home from incarceration and had recently been recognized for his commitment to reentry and positive change.
New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill said she had been briefed on the shooting and that her attorney general was in contact with local officials.
She expressed condolences to the victims, their families and the Trenton community as investigators continued working to determine exactly what happened.
The investigation remains active, and authorities are urging witnesses to provide information that could help identify those responsible.
