Six people were taken to hospitals for evaluation and decontamination Friday after a possible mercury spill at a home in Lutherville, Maryland, prompted a hazardous materials response that later extended into Harford County.
Baltimore County emergency crews responded to the 8600 block of Tower Bridge Way after receiving a report of a possible mercury spill. The Baltimore County Fire Department said multiple patients were transported while crews remained at the property to monitor the situation.
No injuries were reported.
The Maryland Department of the Environment said the incident was discovered while a contractor was working at a home in Lutherville. After leaving the property, the contractor traveled to a hotel in Edgewood, creating a second location for emergency crews to examine.
That prompted a response at the Quality Inn at 2112 Emmorton Park Road in Edgewood. The Joppa Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company sent crews to the hotel, while the Harford County Department of Emergency Services Hazardous Materials Team was also requested.
Authorities reported no patients requiring treatment as a result of the Edgewood response.
Back in Lutherville, the Maryland Department of the Environment and Baltimore County Department of Health joined local emergency crews as officials assessed the possible contamination.
Authorities had not publicly disclosed how much mercury may have been involved or what caused the suspected spill as of the latest available reports.
The incident remains under investigation.
