A 40-foot sailboat was stolen from a Jersey City marina late Saturday night, and New Jersey State Police are asking the public to help identify the person captured on surveillance video.

The vessel was reported stolen from Liberty Harbor Marina in Jersey City around 11 p.m. on Aug. 22, according to State Police. Investigators said the stolen boat is a 1968 Hinckley Bermuda 40, identified by sail number 4066.

Surveillance footage shows a man undocking the sailboat and leaving the marina. State Police later released images from the video in an effort to identify him.

Police described the suspect as a white male who was initially wearing a black hat, black hooded sweatshirt and black shorts. Investigators said he may have later changed into a blue hat and tan hooded sweatshirt.

The stolen vessel has been identified elsewhere as the SV Pathfinder, a dark-blue 1968 Hinckley Bermuda 40 custom yawl. Boat Watch reported Aug. 25 that the boat was last seen north of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge traveling south, with its AIS reportedly turned off.

The boat is listed as having a Yanmar 3JHE 47-horsepower engine, a 47-gallon diesel tank and two masts. Boat Watch said the vessel’s home port is Jersey City and that its U.S. Coast Guard identification number is 515288.

The Liberty Harbor Marina is located in Jersey City’s Morris Canal basin and provides access to New York Harbor.

New Jersey State Police are asking anyone who recognizes the suspect or has information about the stolen sailboat to contact the Carteret Station at 732-541-0491. Anonymous tips are also welcome.

    The investigation remains ongoing.
