DAVIE, Fla. — A man was in critical condition Monday after an excavator became submerged in a retention pond at a construction site in Davie, according to police and fire rescue officials.
Davie police officers responded shortly after 3:30 p.m. to the construction site in the 2200 block of Shotgun Road after receiving a report of a possible drowning. When officers arrived, they found an excavator overturned in the pond with a man in the water.
Rescuers pulled the man from the pond and transported him to Broward Health Medical Center. Davie Fire Rescue officials said the man was in cardiac arrest when rescuers found him.
The man’s identity has not been released.
The construction site is located east of the Interstate 75 interchange with Royal Palm Boulevard. First responders, including divers, were seen at the scene as crews worked to rescue the man.
Ricardo Sanchez, who recently began working at the site, said the incident was a reminder of the risks workers can face around active construction areas. He said he did not know the man who was rescued but planned to continue following site safety procedures.
Construction work can involve heavy equipment, changing site conditions and other hazards, making safety procedures especially important for workers at active job sites.
Davie police are investigating the incident. Officials have not released additional details about what caused the excavator to enter the retention pond or what led to the man’s medical emergency.
