A 33-year-old man was shot during a gunpoint robbery inside a Bronx deli early Tuesday, and police are searching for the gunman captured on surveillance video during the attack.
The shooting happened shortly after midnight at the 149 Grill and Deli on East 149th Street near Walton Avenue, according to police. The injured customer was taken to a local hospital and was reported to be stable Tuesday morning.
Surveillance footage from inside the deli shows the suspect entering the store wearing a maroon sweatshirt or hoodie. He appears to walk past one customer before approaching another man who is near the counter and appears to be handling a backpack.
The gunman then opens fire, striking the customer in the chest and right arm, according to police and local reports. Employees can be seen taking cover as additional shots are fired inside the store.
After shooting the customer, the suspect moves behind the counter and searches the cash register. The surveillance footage also shows him taking a bag of chips from the victim’s backpack before leaving the deli. Police are still working to determine exactly what was taken during the robbery.
The victim is expected to survive. Police have not identified him publicly, and investigators are continuing to look into what led to the shooting.
The suspect was last seen wearing a maroon sweatshirt, gray sweatpants and white sneakers. The NYPD is investigating whether the victim was specifically targeted or whether the shooting occurred as part of the robbery.
No arrest has been announced. Police are asking anyone with information about the suspect or the shooting to contact investigators.
