Drivers in South Florida should plan for extra delays this week as overnight lane closures continue along Okeechobee Road, and a Miami Dolphins preseason game adds even more traffic to the mix.

    Turnpike Landscaping Work

Florida’s Turnpike crews are carrying out a landscaping project that’s shutting down lanes on Okeechobee Road overnight, stretching from the Broward County line to just west of the Homestead Extension. The work includes planting native vegetation and improving visibility around medians, curves, and roadside areas.

Closures run from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., both on weekdays and weekends, and officials say the project could stretch into early 2029.

Dolphins Game Adds to the Mix

South Florida drivers have another reason to expect slowdowns this weekend — the Miami Dolphins play their first home game of the preseason against the New York Giants. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.

While the game isn’t expected to sell out, traffic is still likely to build up along Miami Gardens Drive, Ives Dairy Road, and near the stadium entrances on 27th Avenue and University Drive. Stadium parking opens at noon, and Lot 95 is located at the Golden Glades Parking Garage, 16000 NW 7th Ave.

Turnpike traffic near the stadium may also be heavier than usual, with fans expected to fill park-and-ride lots near the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood and at Golden Glades near I-95.

    Miami-Dade Road Work

A new northbound exit ramp connecting to eastbound Okeechobee Road (Exit 35A) opened this past Wednesday, Aug. 19. Drivers heading toward westbound Okeechobee Road should continue using Exit 34B, which also remains the only access point to Northwest 138th Street.

Starting 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, southbound I-95 drivers exiting at Northwest 14th Street will notice a new traffic pattern, with the exit shifting slightly east onto a newly built ramp lane.

    Elsewhere in Miami-Dade:

    • Biscayne Boulevard: One lane will close between Northeast 61st and 64th streets, both midday (9:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.) and overnight (11:30 p.m.–7:30 a.m.). A similar pattern applies between 64th Street and Sixth Avenue.
    • 135th Street: Eastbound lanes will close from 10:30 a.m.–2:15 p.m. and again from 4:15–8:30 p.m., timed around school zone hours. Westbound closures run 5–6:45 a.m. and 9:15 a.m.–2:15 p.m. This project is expected to wrap up in spring 2028.
    • Northwest 27th Avenue (Opa-locka): Single-lane closures from 9 a.m.–3:30 p.m. daily, with possible double-lane closures overnight (8:30 p.m.–6:30 a.m.). Completion is expected this fall.
    • Northwest 135th Street (30th to 47th avenues): Lanes close from 9:45 a.m.–1:45 p.m. and again from 8 p.m.–6:30 a.m.
    • Metromover: Service will start later than usual on Saturday — 2 p.m. — due to ongoing maintenance.

    Broward County Road Work

    • 22nd Avenue (Hollywood): Single-lane closures between Stirling Road and Sheridan Street, weekdays 7 a.m.–6 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m.–6 p.m.
    • Atlantic Boulevard at Lyons Road (Coconut Creek): Closures Sunday–Thursday, 8 a.m.–5:30 p.m., with nightly closures 6:30 p.m.–7 a.m. Friday and Saturday hours shift to 8:30 a.m.–6:30 p.m. Lyons Road may also see closures Sunday–Thursday nights, 8 p.m.–7 a.m.
    • Broward Boulevard (Lauderhill): Closures between Northwest 33rd Terrace and 29th Avenue, Sunday–Thursday, 9:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m. and overnight 7:30 p.m.–8 a.m.

Drivers heading through these corridors this week — especially around game time Saturday — should build in extra travel time and watch for shifting lane patterns.
