A driver escaped injury early Friday after his car was hit by multiple rounds during a shooting on Northwest 7th Avenue in Miami’s Liberty City area, and he told police the gunfire was aimed directly at him.

Miami police received two ShotSpotter alerts around 12:15 a.m. Friday and set up a perimeter along Northwest 7th Avenue between Northwest 52nd and 54th streets. While establishing the perimeter, officers say they continued hearing gunfire in the area even after arriving on scene.

Investigators later spoke with the driver, who said a man had been shooting at him. Police also found the man’s vehicle at the location, struck by multiple rounds. Despite the damage, no injuries were reported, and the case remains under active investigation. Police have not released a suspect description or a possible motive.

    A Neighborhood Under Watch

This stretch of Northwest 7th Avenue sits in the Model City and Liberty City corridor, an area currently monitored by the Northwest 7th Avenue Community Redevelopment Agency. It’s a mixed commercial-residential block that has seen repeated gunfire incidents this year, part of a broader pattern that keeps drawing police back to this pocket of Northwest Miami-Dade.

How ShotSpotter Led Police to the Scene

Miami police have used ShotSpotter’s acoustic gunshot detection technology since 2014, expanding it to more high-incident neighborhoods by 2017. The system feeds directly into the department’s Real-Time Crime Center, which combines audio sensors with over 1,500 public safety cameras to instantly flag a shooting’s location, direction, and number of rounds fired.

That setup often lets officers begin searching the area before anyone even calls 911. When shell casings are recovered from a scene like this one, they’re processed through the department’s National Integrated Ballistic Information Network machine, which can connect a shooting to other cases involving the same firearm. It’s not yet known whether casings were recovered here or whether Real-Time Crime Center cameras caught footage of a suspect vehicle.

    Part of a Larger Pattern

Gunfire calls like this one aren’t new to the corridor. Earlier this month, a bystander’s windshield was struck during a shootout at a gas station in Northwest Miami-Dade. The month before that, a ShotSpotter alert led officers to a home riddled with bullets, again with no injuries reported. Acoustic sensors have also directed police to a homicide scene on NW 17th Street and to a shooting linked to a TikTok Live dispute nearby — a reminder that in this part of the city, technology often reaches a crime scene before a witness does.

Possible Charges If a Suspect Is Caught

Firing at an occupied vehicle is treated seriously under Florida law. Under Florida Statute § 790.19, shooting into or at an occupied vehicle is a second-degree felony, punishable by up to 15 years in prison and fines up to $10,000. If the shots came from a moving vehicle within 1,000 feet of a person, or across a public road, Florida Statute § 790.15 could apply with the same felony classification. No suspect has been named, and it’s unclear which charges, if any, will apply once someone is identified.

    How to Submit a Tip

Anyone with information is asked to contact Miami police or Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477. Crime Stoppers offers anonymous rewards between $100 and $5,000 for tips leading to an arrest. Tipster identities are legally protected under Florida Statute § 16.557 — communications made to Crime Stoppers are privileged, and knowingly trying to identify a tipster is a third-degree felony. Florida residents can also text tips statewide using the shortcut TIPS (8477).

This is a developing story and will be updated as new information becomes available.
