An Oklahoma woman will spend the rest of her life in prison after being convicted in a case involving the sexual abuse and severe neglect of her 11-year-old daughter, who was forced to deliver a baby at home without medical assistance.

Cherie Dawn Walker, 34, received seven consecutive life sentences on Friday from Muskogee County District Judge Timothy King. The punishment followed a jury’s recommendation after she was found guilty in July of one count of enabling child sexual abuse and six counts of child neglect.

The case shocked the community because of the victim’s age and the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy and delivery. Investigators learned that the child had carried a pregnancy to full term and given birth inside her family’s home in Muskogee County in 2025, without prenatal care or medical assistance.

Prosecutors argued that the adults responsible for protecting the girl failed to provide even basic care during a period when she desperately needed protection.

The sentence marks a major development in a case that has already resulted in a life sentence for the child’s stepfather.

Seven consecutive life sentences for the mother

Judge Timothy King ordered Walker to serve seven life sentences consecutively, meaning the sentences are stacked rather than served at the same time.

The punishment matched the recommendation made by jurors, who found Walker guilty of allowing the abuse and neglect to continue.

Her husband, Dustin Joel Walker, was also convicted in connection with the case. He previously pleaded guilty to one count of sexual abuse of a child under 12 and six counts of child neglect.

He received life imprisonment plus an additional 42 years. The judge ordered him to serve the 42-year term before beginning his life sentence.

The court also imposed additional restrictions, including sex offender registration, supervision requirements if he is ever released, and a prohibition on contacting his victims.

Together, the sentences represent significant criminal penalties for the two adults who were supposed to provide a safe home for the child.

Investigation began after an 11-year-old gave birth at home

Authorities began investigating the family in 2025 after learning that the couple’s 11-year-old daughter had delivered a full-term baby at home.

The child had received no prenatal medical care and was not taken to a medical professional for assistance during the delivery, according to prosecutors.

The circumstances raised serious concerns about how the pregnancy could have continued without intervention from the adults responsible for her well-being.

Assistant District Attorney Janet Hutson said DNA testing established with 99% certainty that Dustin Walker was the infant’s biological father.

Prosecutors also challenged the family’s claims that the adults did not know the girl was pregnant.

Hutson previously explained that although the child was petite, she delivered a normal-sized baby. Prosecutors argued that the pregnancy and birth were evidence of prolonged neglect rather than an incident the adults could reasonably have overlooked.

The case also revealed concerns about the girl’s access to education and opportunities to receive help outside the home.

Prosecutors raised concerns about the child’s isolation

During earlier proceedings, Hutson said the girl had been out of school for a period of time. She indicated that homeschooling may have been involved.

The absence from a regular school environment raised additional questions about whether the child had opportunities to speak with teachers, school staff or other trusted adults who might have noticed signs of abuse.

Schools and healthcare providers can play an important role in identifying possible child abuse because they often interact with children outside their immediate family environment.

Teachers may notice unexplained absences, changes in behavior or signs that a child is experiencing difficulties at home. Medical professionals may also identify injuries or health concerns that require further investigation.

In this case, prosecutors said the child’s circumstances were particularly troubling because she was allegedly left without the medical attention needed during pregnancy and childbirth.

Hutson previously described the experience as deeply traumatic, emphasizing that the consequences would affect the victim long after the criminal proceedings ended.

Family members denied knowing about the pregnancy

After the couple’s arrests, members of the family publicly disputed the idea that they knew what was happening to the girl.

Michelle Justus, the victim’s maternal grandmother, previously said the family had no knowledge of the pregnancy or the circumstances surrounding the birth.

She is now facing a separate charge of child neglect.

Justus had initially been scheduled to stand trial in July, but her proceedings were postponed. Court records list January 12, 2027, as the scheduled start date for her trial.

Her case remains separate from the convictions and sentences already handed down to Cherie and Dustin Walker. The allegations against her have not been established through a conviction.

The upcoming proceedings could provide additional information about what other family members knew and whether anyone outside the household had an opportunity to intervene.

Why the case raises wider child-protection concerns

Beyond the criminal sentences, the case highlights the importance of recognizing and reporting signs that a child may be experiencing abuse or neglect.

Children who are isolated from school, healthcare services and trusted adults can face greater difficulties seeking help. In some situations, the people responsible for their care may also be the individuals causing harm, making outside intervention especially important.

Child-protection professionals emphasize that children should have safe opportunities to speak with trusted adults and access medical attention when needed.

Pregnancy involving a child as young as 11 requires urgent medical attention and safeguarding. Lack of prenatal care can expose both the child and the infant to serious health risks.

The circumstances in this case also demonstrate why reports of suspected abuse must be taken seriously, even when family members deny that anything is wrong.

Anyone who suspects a child is being abused or neglected should contact local child-protection authorities or law enforcement. In the United States, suspected child abuse can also be reported through the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-422-4453.

A long road ahead for the young victim

While the sentencing brings the criminal cases against the mother and stepfather to a significant point, the consequences for the child will not end with the court’s decision.

The victim has endured circumstances that prosecutors described as horrific, and her recovery will require ongoing protection, stability and appropriate support.

The court proceedings have established criminal responsibility for the two defendants, but the wider family investigation is not over.

With the grandmother’s trial scheduled for January 2027, another chapter of the case remains ahead.

For now, the seven consecutive life sentences send a strong message about the seriousness of the crimes. More importantly, the case has drawn attention to the responsibility adults have to protect children from abuse, provide necessary medical care and ensure that vulnerable young people are not left without a way to seek help.
