A family in Canton, Texas, is facing an unimaginable loss after an early-morning house fire claimed the lives of a mother and her four children, leaving the children’s father and one surviving child to recover from the tragedy.

The fire broke out shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 21, in Van Zandt County, east of Dallas. By Thursday, a growing memorial outside the damaged home reflected the grief felt by relatives, neighbors and others across the community.

The victims were identified by family members as 27-year-old Jasmine Henson and her children, Robert Mitchell, Troy Mitchell, Levi Mitchell and Avril Mitchell.

According to the family, the father and one of the couple’s five children survived the fire and are recovering. The circumstances surrounding the blaze remain under investigation.

For neighbors who watched the family grow up and play outside, the loss has been difficult to comprehend. A home that was once filled with the sounds of children has become the center of a community’s mourning.

Firefighters Forced to Break Through an Exterior Wall

Emergency crews were called to the home after reports of a fire and people trapped inside. When firefighters arrived, part of the mobile home was already heavily involved in flames.

Officials said three occupants managed to escape, but four children remained inside. Firefighters had to breach an exterior wall to reach them because trees obstructed access to part of the home and a window was boarded up.

Three children were found dead at the scene. The fourth child, Robert, was taken to a Dallas-area hospital but later died. Henson was also transported to a hospital, where she died later that day.

South Van Zandt Volunteer Fire Department Battalion Chief Jason Foster described the difficult rescue effort, explaining that firefighters immediately began providing emergency assistance to a child who had been brought out of the home.

Crews from multiple departments responded, including firefighters from Canton, South Van Zandt, Ben Wheeler and Wills Point.

Foster said the fire was brought under control in approximately 20 minutes. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, four children and their mother ultimately died.

Investigators have not announced a final determination about what caused the fire. Although a firefighter said the flames appeared heaviest toward the middle and right side of the mobile home, the official cause has not been established.

Neighbors Remember Children Who Were Always Outside Playing

For people living nearby, the family was part of everyday life in the neighborhood.

Leslie Leistikow, a neighbor who lives next door, said she was heartbroken by the deaths. She described the tragedy as the loss of an entire immediate family for the children’s father.

“No parent should have to bury their children… period,” Leistikow said.

She recalled seeing the children outside on Saturday mornings, riding their little bicycles or a four-wheeler and enjoying time together.

“You’d hear them Saturday morning playing, and rather it be on their little bikes or a four-wheeler, they were just full of life,” she said.

Those ordinary memories have taken on a different meaning since the fire. For neighbors, the loss is not simply a tragic headline but the absence of children they had grown accustomed to seeing outside their home.

Leistikow also recalled hearing commotion and yelling during the fire, a moment that has stayed with her as the community tries to understand what happened.

Mike Mitchell, the children’s paternal grandfather, said he and neighbors rushed to help, but the home was already engulfed in flames.

The family’s surviving members now face the difficult process of recovering while coping with the deaths of their loved ones.

    School Community Mourns the Children

The tragedy has also affected students, educators and families in the Canton Independent School District.

District officials confirmed that some of the children attended schools within the district, including Canton Elementary and Canton Intermediate Schools.

In a statement, the district expressed sadness over the deaths and offered condolences to the family, classmates, teachers and others affected by the loss.

The deaths of young students can have a profound effect on school communities, particularly when classmates and teachers are trying to understand a sudden loss. Schools may help affected students through counseling, support staff and opportunities to speak with trusted adults.

For children who knew the family, returning to classrooms and familiar routines may be especially difficult as they process the news.

The district’s message reflected the wider grief spreading through Canton, where residents have been gathering, sharing memories and looking for ways to support those left behind.

Community Organizes Fundraising and Other Support

As the family begins facing life after the fire, community members are organizing practical assistance for the surviving father and child.

A benefit barbecue was planned for Saturday, October 24, with proceeds intended to support the family affected by the fire as well as the family of a sheriff’s deputy killed in a separate incident earlier in the week.

Residents have also been organizing donations and other forms of assistance to help the surviving family members during their recovery.

Such support can be especially important after a residential fire, when survivors may need help with everyday expenses, clothing, meals and temporary living arrangements in addition to dealing with emotional trauma.

For the father and surviving child, the road ahead will involve both physical recovery and the loss of four children and a mother. The community’s efforts are intended to help ease some of the immediate burdens while the family navigates an exceptionally painful period.

Leistikow said she believes the entire town is feeling the loss.

“My heart goes out to them, the whole town does, I’m sure,” she said.

    Fire Investigation Remains Ongoing

Authorities continue working to determine what led to the deadly blaze. Officials have not announced a final cause, and key questions about how the fire started remain unanswered.

The investigation is particularly important as emergency officials work to establish the circumstances surrounding the fire and the efforts to reach those trapped inside.

For now, the focus in Canton remains on remembering Henson and her children while supporting the two surviving family members.

The memorial outside the home serves as a reminder of the lives lost and the family left behind. Neighbors who once heard children playing on weekend mornings are now coming together to offer assistance and comfort.

As the investigation continues, the community is left with grief, unanswered questions and a shared determination to help a father and child begin the difficult process of rebuilding their lives after an extraordinary loss.
