A tragic shooting inside an Indiana home has ended with a jury finding a father guilty of neglect after his young son accessed a firearm and accidentally shot his 5-year-old sister.

Jacob Grayson, 32, was convicted of neglect of a dependent resulting in death in connection with the death of Crystal Rose Grayson in Muncie. Jurors also found him guilty of three additional counts of child neglect.

According to prosecutors, the case centered on a preventable danger inside the family’s home: a firearm kept in a safe that the children could access because its key had been left in the lock.

Grayson faces more than 40 years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for November 12.

The verdict brings a major development in a case that began on July 26, 2022, when emergency responders were called to a home on South Monroe Street after a child was shot.

    How the Shooting Happened

Police arrived at the home and found Crystal suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Paramedics rushed the child to a hospital, but she later died from her injuries.

Investigators learned that Crystal’s 6-year-old brother had found a firearm inside a safe located in his parents’ bedroom dresser.

According to the arrest affidavit, the boy told investigators that his mother had been taking a nap when he discovered the gun. He said the key was still in the safe’s lock, allowing him to turn it and open the compartment.

The child took out the firearm and began playing with it. The gun discharged, striking his younger sister.

What began as a child’s access to a firearm quickly became a fatal emergency, leaving the family and community facing the consequences of a tragedy that investigators said could have been prevented.

Father Knew His Son Had Found the Gun Before

One of the most significant details to emerge during the investigation involved the father’s knowledge of the danger.

Jacob Grayson reportedly told police that his son had discovered the firearm previously. Instead of moving it to a location the child could not reach or securing it in a way that prevented access, the father moved the gun to the opposite side of the dresser.

That decision became a central issue in the neglect case.

Prosecutors argued that parents have a responsibility to protect young children from foreseeable dangers, particularly when firearms are present in the home. A locked safe offers little protection if a child can open it using a key left in the lock.

Delaware County Prosecutor Eric Hoffman sharply criticized the circumstances surrounding the shooting, saying the child should never have been able to reach the firearm.

He also emphasized that parents have an affirmative duty to protect their children from serious harm.

The jury ultimately found Grayson guilty of neglect of a dependent resulting in death, along with three lesser neglect charges.

Prosecutors Describe Disturbing Conditions Inside the Home

The investigation also raised concerns about the children’s living environment.

According to police, officers described the home as being in deplorable condition, with trash and animal feces throughout the residence. Investigators also reported that the children’s mattresses were soiled and lacked bedding.

Those observations formed part of the broader circumstances surrounding the child-neglect allegations.

While the fatal shooting was the central event in the case, the reported household conditions added another dimension to the investigation into the children’s care and safety.

The convictions reflect the jury’s findings on the charges brought against Grayson. The full consequences of the case will be addressed further during sentencing.

    Mother Was Also Convicted

Jacob Grayson is not the only parent to face criminal consequences in connection with Crystal’s death.

His wife, Kimberly Grayson, was convicted of the same charges in March, according to reports about the case.

Her sentencing was subsequently delayed because of concerns regarding her competency.

The separate proceedings mean the legal process involving both parents has unfolded on different timelines, even though the charges stem from the same fatal incident.

The case has drawn attention to the responsibilities of caregivers when young children live in a home where firearms are present.

A Little Girl Remembered for Her Smile

Beyond the criminal charges and courtroom proceedings, Crystal’s death represents the loss of a young child whose life was only beginning.

Her obituary described her as a typical 5-year-old with an energetic spirit and an infectious smile.

Crystal loved watching cartoons, and one of her favorites was Olaf, the cheerful snowman from Disney’s Frozen.

The description offers a glimpse of the little girl her family and loved ones lost. Instead of growing up and creating new memories, Crystal’s life ended in a shooting inside her own home.

Her story is a painful reminder that young children may not understand the dangers associated with firearms. Curiosity can lead them to handle objects they do not recognize as life-threatening, making secure storage and adult supervision essential.

    Why Secure Firearm Storage Matters

The circumstances of the shooting highlight an important safety issue for households with young children: firearms must be stored in a way that prevents children from gaining access.

Safety experts generally recommend keeping firearms locked in a secure gun safe or lockbox, storing ammunition separately when appropriate, and ensuring that keys and access codes are inaccessible to children.

A firearm should never be considered safely stored simply because it is inside a container labeled or intended as a safe. The security of that storage depends on whether a child can open it.

Parents and caregivers should also remember that children who have encountered a firearm before may be more likely to recognize where it is kept or attempt to access it again.

In this case, investigators said the boy had previously found the gun, making the decision to leave it accessible particularly significant.

    What Happens Next?

Jacob Grayson is scheduled to be sentenced on November 12 and faces more than 40 years in prison, according to prosecutors.

Kimberly Grayson’s sentencing remains delayed because of competency concerns.

The convictions mark a significant step toward resolving the criminal cases connected to Crystal’s death. However, the tragedy leaves a broader question for parents and caregivers: what precautions are necessary to ensure that a child cannot reach a firearm in the home?

For Crystal, the consequences were irreversible. Her death has become a stark example of how a firearm left accessible to a young child can turn an ordinary day into a devastating loss.
