An Indiana family is facing a devastating loss after a 38-year-old man was accused of fatally attacking his mother and stepfather at their home in Indianapolis. Investigators say the incident involved a shovel and a kitchen knife, while neighbors who witnessed the violence rushed to intervene.
David White was arrested following the October 11 incident and preliminarily charged with murder. Formal charges from the prosecutor’s office were still pending as of Tuesday morning.
Police were called to a home on Lakeshire Lane, near West 96th Street and Township Line Road, shortly after noon following reports of a stabbing. When emergency crews arrived, they found an 80-year-old man in the driveway and his 75-year-old wife inside the house. Both had suffered multiple injuries consistent with a stabbing.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband was rushed to a hospital in critical condition but later died from his injuries.
According to witness accounts included in court records, White allegedly attacked his stepfather with a shovel, striking at his neck. One neighbor who saw what was happening stepped in and managed to take the shovel away. Investigators say White then continued the assault with a kitchen knife.
After the alleged attack, White reportedly went back inside the house, removed his clothing until he was wearing only underwear, and waited for police to take him into custody.
During an interview with detectives, White allegedly declined to discuss what had happened. Investigators reportedly noted that he appeared to understand the situation but did not want to answer questions, saying police were holding him against his will.
Previous Mental Health Concerns Reported
The investigation has also brought attention to earlier concerns involving White and his family. Police had previously responded to the residence over mental health-related issues, including a visit by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s Mobile Crisis Assistance Team earlier in the year.
A neighbor reportedly told investigators that the couple had recently said White had stopped taking his prescribed mental health medication. However, the circumstances surrounding the attack remain under investigation, and this information alone does not establish what led to the violence.
Mental health crises can be difficult for families to navigate, particularly when concerns arise about a loved one’s well-being. Crisis response services can help connect people experiencing an urgent mental health crisis with appropriate support, although the specific circumstances of this case have not been fully established publicly.
Neighbors Remember the Couple
For people living nearby, the deaths have left a deep emotional impact. Neighbors described the couple as kind, familiar faces who had been part of the community for decades.
One resident, speaking about the couple, said they were among the nicest people they had ever known, expressing disbelief over the tragedy.
Indianapolis City-County Councilor Leroy Robinson also offered condolences, saying the loss affected not only the victims’ loved ones but also neighbors and others in the surrounding community.
White is being held without bond at the Marion County Jail while prosecutors consider the formal charges. The case remains subject to the legal process, and the allegations against him have not yet been tested at trial.
