Miami police are asking for the public’s help in finding the driver who struck and killed a man riding a scooter in the Overtown area early Tuesday morning.
The crash happened shortly before 1 a.m. on October 6 near Northwest 7th Avenue and Northwest 7th Street. Police said the victim, identified as Scheber Elias, was riding an e-scooter when he was hit by a vehicle that left the area without stopping.
Officers later responded to reports of a man lying in the roadway. Miami Fire Rescue took Elias to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where he was initially treated for critical injuries. He later died.
Elias was known in the neighborhood, with neighbors saying he lived only a few blocks from the crash location. They described him as someone they regularly saw around his apartment.
Police have now released images of the vehicle they believe was involved. Investigators are looking for a dark-colored Toyota Corolla from model years 2020 through 2025. The vehicle is expected to have significant windshield damage and may also have damage to the front passenger side. Police said it was last seen traveling toward the Little Havana area.
The vehicle description gives investigators a new lead as they work to identify the driver. Police are asking residents, workers and others who may have noticed a damaged Toyota Corolla matching the description to come forward, including anyone who may have seen such a vehicle at a nearby repair or body shop.
Anyone with information about the crash or the suspected vehicle can contact the Miami Police Department at 305-579-6111.
People who want to remain anonymous can contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
The investigation remains active as detectives continue working to determine exactly what happened and identify the driver who left the scene.
