A mother has been released from the hospital, while her 2-year-old daughter remains in critical condition after a knife attack near a school bus stop in Providence, Rhode Island. A 46-year-old man, Nelson Blanco, has been arrested and faces multiple charges in connection with the October 7 incident.
The attack happened near the intersection of Broad Street and Public Street in South Providence as the mother waited with her young daughter for her other children to return from school. The toddler was sitting in a stroller when the violence began.
According to investigators, Blanco approached the pair and made insulting remarks toward the mother. Although she attempted to move away, police said he approached them again before allegedly attacking the child with a knife. The mother was also stabbed in the shoulder as she tried to deal with the frightening situation.
The incident drew an immediate response from people nearby. Witnesses intervened and pursued the suspect after he fled the scene. Investigators said Blanco entered a nearby home without permission and attempted to hide in the basement, where police eventually took him into custody.
Toddler Remains in Critical Condition
Both victims were taken to a hospital following the attack. The mother was treated and released, but the child remained in critical condition as of Thursday, October 8, according to police.
Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez described the incident as heartbreaking and expressed concern for the family and the wider community. Authorities have said there is no evidence that Blanco knew the victims, and investigators have not established a motive for the attack.
The child’s condition has been a major concern as the investigation continues. The incident also prompted renewed attention to the actions of bystanders who stepped in when they saw the family in danger.
Suspect Faces Multiple Charges
Blanco appeared in court on Thursday, October 8. He faces two counts of assault with intent to commit murder, one involving the adult victim and another involving the 2-year-old child. Additional charges include assault with a deadly weapon, breaking and entering into a dwelling occupied by a person over 60, and two knife-related offenses.
Authorities said Blanco admitted to the attack during questioning, but no clear explanation for his actions has been established. He was ordered held on $200,000 bail in connection with a separate pending matter and is scheduled to return to court on October 22.
A judge also ordered a competency evaluation and a dangerousness assessment in connection with the new case. These evaluations will help the court determine how the proceedings should move forward.
Earlier Criminal Cases Raise Questions
Blanco’s record includes earlier arrests and criminal cases dating back more than two decades. In 2003, he was accused of stabbing two 7-year-old boys in Providence in a separate incident. That case did not proceed to trial after he was found incompetent to stand trial.
More recently, Blanco was found incompetent to stand trial in a domestic violence case in July 2026. Court records and statements from authorities indicate that he had been allowed to remain in the community under outpatient treatment arrangements.
His earlier cases are now drawing renewed attention following the latest attack. However, the allegations from previous incidents must be distinguished from convictions, and the current charges will be addressed through the court process.
For now, the investigation into the Providence stabbing continues, while the young girl remains hospitalized and her family faces an uncertain recovery. Authorities have not confirmed a motive for the attack.
