Adasia Jones, 22, has been charged with homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle in connection with the death of 26-year-old Darius Allen of Racine.
Police were called to the 500 block of Hubbard Street at about 2:58 a.m. Sunday, September 20, after a report that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle. Officers found Allen in the roadway with serious injuries.
Allen was taken to Ascension All Saints Hospital before being transferred to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee. Police said he was in critical condition with several internal injuries. Authorities were notified around 7 a.m. that Allen had died.
Investigators said the incident followed an argument between Jones and Allen. According to the criminal complaint, Jones told investigators she had gone to Allen’s home after midnight to talk about problems in their relationship. She said the argument became physical and alleged that Allen choked her.
Jones told police that Allen then climbed onto the hood of her vehicle as she attempted to leave and refused to get off. She said she began driving and Allen eventually fell from the vehicle.
According to her account, Jones drove a short distance before turning back to check on Allen. She said she did not see him in the roadway and then struck him with the vehicle. She estimated her speed at between 10 and 15 mph.
Police also reported that Jones showed signs of intoxication. She told investigators she had consumed two shots of vodka several hours before driving. Officers documented several signs during field sobriety testing, and a blood sample was later collected under a search warrant. The complaint said laboratory results were not yet included in the filing.
A witness who was Allen’s brother told investigators that he saw Allen on the hood of the vehicle before he fell into the street. He also told police he believed Jones accelerated toward Allen. Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Jones was initially arrested on suspicion of reckless endangering safety and operating while intoxicated causing injury. After Allen died, the charge was amended to homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle.
Jones appeared in Racine County Circuit Court on September 21. A court commissioner found probable cause and set a $15,000 cash bond. If released, Jones must remain on GPS-monitored house arrest and is prohibited from possessing or consuming alcohol. A no-contact condition involving Allen’s family was also imposed.
Jones is scheduled to return to court on October 1 for a preliminary hearing.
The investigation remains active. Racine police are asking anyone with additional information about the incident to contact the department’s Investigations Unit.
