New testimony in the case of an 8-year-old Lynwood boy has provided a disturbing account of the months leading up to his death, including allegations that he was severely malnourished, restrained and repeatedly abused before his body was found inside a freezer in his parents’ apartment.

Isaiah Harrison was found dead in October 2025. His parents, Destiny Harrison and Daniel Monzon, along with his paternal grandmother, Ana Carcamo-Zarceno, are charged with murder and torture. All three have pleaded not guilty.

The case returned to court this month for a four-day preliminary hearing in Compton, where witnesses described what they said happened inside the family’s Lynwood home.

Witness Describes What Happened After Isaiah Died

One of Monzon’s friends testified that he was contacted by the family after Isaiah had died. The witness said he was initially told the child was sick but later heard that Harrison had struck Isaiah, causing him to fall and hit his head.

The witness said no one called 911 because the family was afraid.

He also testified that Zarceno told him that she and Harrison had wrapped Isaiah’s body in plastic and that a freezer was obtained. The witness said he later saw Isaiah inside the freezer and that the family asked him to help dispose of the body.

According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Isaiah died on Oct. 24, 2025, and his body was discovered several days later in a cooler filled with ice.

Boy’s Weight Fell Dramatically Before His Death

Testimony during the preliminary hearing focused heavily on Isaiah’s physical condition during the year before he died.

Relatives said Isaiah had previously been a cheerful child who enjoyed video games, pizza and cats. His aunt testified that he sometimes sneaked food at night and hid snacks around the home.

Family members had been concerned about his weight, which relatives estimated at roughly 200 pounds.

By the time his body was found, Isaiah weighed about 65 pounds, according to testimony from a deputy medical examiner. The medical examiner estimated that he had lost about two-thirds of his body weight over roughly a year.

A medical expert who testified during the hearing described signs of severe malnutrition and muscle wasting. Investigators also found ropes and chains inside the apartment, which witnesses said had been used to restrain Isaiah.

Testimony Describes Long Period of Restraint and Abuse

A juvenile family member described Isaiah being restrained for extended periods, including overnight. The testimony alleged that ropes and chains were used to keep him from moving around the home or getting food.

The child also reportedly endured repeated physical abuse, according to testimony presented in court.

A social worker’s recorded interview with Monzon’s younger sister was also played during the hearing. She described the use of restraints and alleged that Isaiah was sometimes denied food as punishment.

The medical evidence presented in court indicated that Isaiah suffered multiple injuries as well as the effects of prolonged restraint.

His official cause of death was listed as a bacterial infection resulting from pneumonia. Blunt-force injuries and the effects of long-term restraint were identified as significant contributing factors.

Questions Raised About Missed Warning Signs

The case has also raised questions about whether warning signs were missed before Isaiah’s death.

A civil lawsuit filed on behalf of Isaiah’s relatives alleges that reports of abuse reached Los Angeles County’s child welfare agency but were not properly investigated. The lawsuit also raises concerns about Isaiah’s absence from school.

Relatives said Isaiah was being kept largely out of public view during the period when his condition was deteriorating.

The lawsuit separately alleges that the Lynwood Unified School District failed to properly investigate why Isaiah was not attending school. The district has disputed the legal claims in court, and the allegations in the lawsuit have not been established as facts.

The county’s child welfare agency has said it was saddened by Isaiah’s death and emphasized its responsibility to work with other agencies to protect children. The agency generally does not discuss individual cases because of confidentiality requirements.

Defendants Face Trial After Preliminary Hearing

After four days of testimony, the three defendants were held to answer on the murder and torture charges.

Harrison, Monzon and Carcamo-Zarceno have pleaded not guilty and remain entitled to a fair trial. Prosecutors have not yet decided whether they will seek the death penalty.

The case now moves forward through the criminal court process, where prosecutors will have to prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt.

Isaiah’s death has also prompted renewed attention to the systems and adults who may have encountered warning signs before his condition became fatal. For now, those questions remain part of separate legal proceedings and civil claims surrounding the case.
