A 6-year-old Frankfort girl died Tuesday after she was struck by a school bus during the afternoon student commute, according to Frankfort police.

Officers were called to the 500 block of Aberdeen Road at about 3:24 p.m. Tuesday after a collision involving a school bus and a child. When they arrived, they found the girl unresponsive and suffering from serious injuries.

Witnesses and first responders immediately began CPR and other lifesaving efforts at the scene. The child was then taken by ambulance to a local hospital, where she later died.

The Cook County Medical Examiner identified the girl as Jenna Menias of Frankfort. She was a student in Frankfort School District 157-C.

Other students were on the bus

The school bus involved in the crash was operated through Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210 and was transporting students from Frankfort School District 157-C.

Several students were aboard when the collision occurred. Emergency responders evaluated the students at the scene, and they were later reunited with their families. No other injuries were reported in the crash.

Frankfort School District 157-C said the incident occurred during the afternoon commute and that district officials and Lincoln Way Transportation are cooperating with police as the investigation continues.

The district also acknowledged the emotional impact of the incident on students and staff, encouraging students who are struggling after the crash to speak with a trusted adult, teacher, social worker or another member of the school’s support team.

    Investigation continues

Authorities have not released details explaining what led to the collision. Police have also not announced any charges connected to the crash.

The investigation remains active, and authorities are asking anyone who may have information about what happened to contact the Frankfort Police Department.

Frankfort police expressed sympathy for Jenna’s family, the students who witnessed the incident, first responders and everyone affected by the tragedy.

The crash occurred on Aberdeen Road in a residential part of Frankfort, where investigators worked at the scene following the collision.
