A frightening situation at a North Texas Walmart ended with a six-year-old child safely reunited with family after a vehicle containing the child was reported stolen Monday morning.
The incident occurred on October 12 at the Walmart Fuel Center along East FM 1187 in Crowley, Texas. Police received a report at approximately 9:40 a.m. after learning that a vehicle had been taken while the young child was still inside.
Officers quickly began searching for the missing vehicle, using surveillance technology to help determine where it was heading. The vehicle was tracked north into Fort Worth, prompting coordination between Crowley police and Fort Worth officers.
Authorities eventually located the vehicle in the 1200 block of West Spurgeon Street. When officers checked inside, they found the six-year-old child unharmed. The child was then safely reunited with family members, bringing a tense search to a reassuring end.
Suspect Taken Into Custody After Foot Chase
Police identified the suspect as 23-year-old Manuel Hernandez. According to investigators, Hernandez left the vehicle and fled on foot after officers located it.
The search continued until officers found Hernandez near La Gran Plaza in Fort Worth, where he was taken into custody. The response involved cooperation between local law enforcement agencies, helping officers locate both the vehicle and the suspect.
Hernandez faces several charges, including kidnapping, theft involving property valued between $2,500 and $30,000, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and possession of a controlled substance.
The charges are allegations, and the case will proceed through the legal system.
How Police Tracked the Stolen Vehicle
Investigators used the Flock camera system to follow the vehicle’s movements from the Crowley area toward Fort Worth. Such camera systems can help law enforcement identify vehicles and trace their movements by capturing license plate information at monitored locations.
In this case, the technology helped officers narrow their search and locate the vehicle away from the Walmart Fuel Center.
The incident also highlighted the importance of coordination between neighboring police departments when a reported crime crosses city boundaries. Crowley and Fort Worth officers worked together during the search and subsequent arrest.
Investigation Remains Ongoing
Although the child was found safe, police have not indicated that the investigation is complete. Authorities are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the reported vehicle theft and the events that followed.
The incident serves as a reminder for drivers to remain alert when stopping at fuel stations and other public locations. Keeping vehicles secured, taking keys when leaving the driver’s seat, and avoiding leaving children unattended in vehicles are important safety precautions.
For the family involved, the most significant outcome was that the child was recovered without reported injuries. Police have not publicly established a motive for the incident, and further details may emerge as the investigation continues.
