A 53-year-old Indianapolis man has died after being shot on the city’s east side early Thursday, with detectives continuing to investigate what led to the deadly incident.
Police were called to the 2100 block of North Ritter Avenue, near East 21st Street, shortly after midnight on Oct. 8 after receiving a report of a person who had been shot.
Officers arrived to find a man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, but his injuries proved fatal.
The victim was later identified as Jason Alexander Payton, 53, by the Marion County Coroner’s Office.
Investigators have not publicly identified a suspect or announced an arrest in connection with the shooting. The circumstances surrounding the gunfire, including what may have led to the incident, remain under investigation.
The location is near the Rolland Manor area along North Ritter Avenue. The same stretch of Ritter Avenue has been the scene of previous serious incidents, but investigators have not indicated that those cases are connected to Payton’s death.
Detectives are now working to determine what happened before the shooting and whether anyone else was involved. Investigators are also seeking information from people who may have witnessed the incident or have relevant surveillance footage.
