A 23-year-old Woodstock man died early Sunday morning after the pickup truck he was driving left the roadway and crashed into several trees near Crystal Lake, authorities said.
The crash happened around 2:19 a.m. September 20 near the intersection of Butternut Drive and Chestnut Drive in Dorr Township, in an unincorporated area near Crystal Lake. Deputies with the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and crews from the Crystal Lake Fire Protection District responded to the scene.
Investigators said the man was driving a 2024 Toyota Tacoma westbound on Butternut Drive when the vehicle failed to negotiate a curve. The truck then left the roadway on the south side, crossed Chestnut Drive and struck several trees.
The driver was the only person inside the Toyota. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have identified the victim as a Woodstock resident, but his name has not been publicly released.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation. Investigators said speed, weather conditions and alcohol may have contributed to the crash, but no final determination has been made regarding the cause.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Traffic Crash Investigation Unit is handling the crash investigation along with the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
Officials have not released additional details about what may have happened immediately before the truck left the roadway. The investigation remains ongoing.
