A 22-year-old man is facing criminal charges after a vehicle struck two people in south Fort Worth early Saturday, leaving both victims hospitalized with serious injuries, according to Fort Worth police.
Yoriel Cabrera was arrested following the September 19 crash in the 5700 block of Crowley Road. Police said he was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and intoxication assault with a vehicle causing serious bodily injury.
Officers were called to the area shortly after 12:30 a.m. after receiving a report of a hit-and-run. When they arrived, they found two adults who had been struck by a vehicle. Both were taken to a hospital for treatment.
The victims were identified as 48-year-old Tiffany Chapman and 32-year-old Dione Gusman. Chapman later described the crash from her hospital bed, saying she suffered two broken legs, a punctured and collapsed lung, and a broken rib. She also underwent surgery and had plates and screws placed in her right knee, according to her account to local television station FOX 4.
Chapman told reporters that she had been at a pool hall with friends before the crash. She said there had been a verbal exchange involving someone in her group and a man in the parking lot. She later saw headlights approaching before being struck.
Police said Cabrera attempted to leave after the crash but was detained by people at the scene. Fort Worth police spokesman Bradley C. Perez told CBS Texas that Cabrera had injuries and reportedly told officers he received them from people he had been playing pool with. Police did not say how those injuries occurred.
The case also includes an allegation of intoxication assault, but the charges themselves do not establish guilt. Cabrera is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Cabrera was booked into the Tarrant County Jail on September 19. Public booking information shows that he was later released on September 21 after posting bond.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash and the events that led up to it.
