Police responded to the area near Aerie Stadium on the north side of the school at about 8:40 p.m. Friday, while Eden Prairie was playing Minnetonka in the homecoming matchup.
The two injured people were taken to a hospital for treatment. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening, and authorities had not released their names or ages.
The gunfire brought the football game to an immediate halt. An announcement instructed people on the field and in the stands to evacuate as officers moved in to secure the area.
Eden Prairie Schools worked with police and emergency crews as students, families, players and other spectators were moved away from the stadium. People leaving the game were directed toward the baseball diamonds, while those needing to be picked up were sent to Round Lake Park.
As the response continued, people still inside the high school were temporarily placed on a hold while officers worked to secure the area. The hold was later lifted, and those remaining at the school were directed to leave through the south doors and head toward Round Lake Park.
The school district established a reunification point at the pavilion south of the tennis courts at Round Lake Park for players, marching band members, students and families arriving to meet one another.
The Eden Prairie Fire Department and Hennepin County EMS also responded to the incident. Police later confirmed there was no active threat in the area, although the investigation remained underway.
The school’s north parking lot was closed during the response, and officials asked people to stay away from the high school and nearby Community Center area while investigators worked at the scene.
Eden Prairie Police Chief Matt Sacket said investigators were working to determine what led to the shooting. No arrest had been announced in the initial investigation, and authorities had not publicly identified a suspect or established a motive.
The shooting interrupted what was supposed to be a major homecoming night for students and families. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz also issued a statement expressing support for the students and families affected by the incident.
The football game between Eden Prairie and Minnetonka was postponed. Play is scheduled to resume Saturday at 11 a.m.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional details are expected as authorities release more information.
