Two people were killed and several others injured Friday afternoon after a serious multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of Victoria and Doris avenues in Oxnard.
Emergency crews were called to the area shortly before 4 p.m. on September 25, where a major collision had involved multiple vehicles. Ventura County Fire Department records show a heavy traffic collision was reported at the intersection around 3:55 p.m.
Fire officials said seven patients were involved in the crash. Two people died at the scene, while four others were taken to nearby hospitals. One of those hospitalized suffered serious injuries, another had moderate injuries and two had minor injuries. One additional person declined transportation to a hospital.
The crash left extensive damage across the intersection. Images from the scene showed a pickup truck overturned on its side and another damaged vehicle beneath it, along with debris spread across the roadway. A traffic sign and light pole were also knocked down in the collision.
Investigators Looking Into How the Crash Happened
Oxnard police Sgt. Michael Gens said investigators were examining witness accounts indicating that a pickup truck had been traveling north on Victoria Avenue at a high rate of speed before striking two other vehicles. Those vehicles were then pushed into additional cars, according to the preliminary account provided by police.
Gens also said the pickup driver was taken to a hospital and was suspected of being impaired by alcohol or drugs. That remains part of the investigation, and authorities have not announced a final determination about what caused the crash.
The identities of the people who died and those who were injured have not been publicly released. Officials have described the victims as adults.
Victoria Avenue was closed in the area as emergency crews worked at the scene and investigators examined the wreckage. Authorities later reported that all lanes between Gonzales Road and Teal Club Road were shut down while the response continued.
Police have not announced any arrests in connection with the crash. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the collision.
