A 16-year-old boy died after he was shot in the neck Wednesday night in Chicago’s South Loop, police said.

The shooting happened shortly after 9 p.m. in the 1100 block of South Michigan Avenue. Officers found the teen suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck, according to Chicago police.

He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition. He later died from his injuries.

Initial information indicated the shooting occurred near a skate park, though police have not said what led to the gunfire or identified a possible motive.

Area 3 detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. No further details about a possible suspect were immediately available.

The investigation remains ongoing, and police are expected to determine how the shooting happened and what led up to it.
