You might have noticed that schools are constantly looking for bus drivers. This is very common for schools nationwide, There has been a 92% decline in bus drivers in the past years. Bus drivers are an underappreciated job.
We do not typically take the time to think about our bus drivers and appreciate them, maybe we should though. The average bus driver’s hourly wage according to Google is around $19. However, we do not think that they work maybe four to six hours a day depending on if they take extra routes. This is not an ideal job to work for most people making the position harder to fill. However, if you know anyone looking for a job you might recommend them to become a bus driver and help the community. However, there are a couple of requirements as well making it harder to fulfill.
 All bus drivers must be at least 21 years of age with a minimum of two years of driving experience.Â
Have passed a satisfactory criminal background check. Have a negative pre-employment drug test.Â
Be physically qualified by passing the physician’s T8 form. Pass semi-annual driver record checks through the Ohio Department of Education.Â
Obtain a CDL (commercial Driver’s license) with at least a Class C classification with a school bus and Passenger Endorsement.
Observe a route with an experienced driver and students onboard and drive a route with an experienced driver and students onboard successfully complete pre-service and in-service training.
Participate in drug and alcohol testing as mandated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety AdministrationÂ
Have and maintain a clean driving record
Without bus drivers, our school’s non-drivers, sports teams, and field trips would be heavily affected. Lacking bus drivers is highly inconvenient and affecting schools nationwide. Next time you take the bus, take a second and thank the bus driver, and always clean up after yourself. It is important to always be kind and keep in mind the people around you.
